Susquehanna Men’s Lacrosse Flies Past Drew

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore midfielder Jake Turner (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) netted his first career hat trick and senior captain Colton Dick (Owings, Md./Northern) had two goals and two assists in leading the Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team to their first win of the 2021 season Wednesday afternoon. Susquehanna (1-4, 1-2 LC) posted a dominant 17-7 Landmark Conference victory over the host Drew University Rangers (0-2, 0-2 LC).
 
How It Happened
First-year midfielder Jason Carey (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) notched the first goal of the game 43 seconds in to give the River Hawks the first lead of the contest. Drew responded with back-to-back goals to stake its only lead of the game, 2-1, with 13:06 left in the first period. SU outscored the hosts, 4-1, the rest of the quarter and took a 5-3 advantage into the second stanza.
 
Sophomore midfielder Tommy Larmore pulled the Rangers within one with the first goal of the second period but Susquehanna rattled off four unanswered goals to claim a 9-4 halftime lead.
 
The River Hawks extended its run to five straight with the first score of the second half six seconds in as sophomore Ryan Prum (Secane, Pa./Ridley) won the opening face-off and sprinted down for the goal – his first collegiate tally. Drew added another one to the scoreboard before SU fired off five more unanswered goals in the final 8:41 of the third. Sophomore midfielder Charles Braught IV (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) had two goals in the 5-0 run.
 
Top Performers
Turner paced all scorers with a career-best three goals while Dick tallied a game- and team-best four points on a season-high two goals and two assists. Junior attackman Logan Frank (Sykesville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and sophomore midfielder Victor Simone (Belvidere, N.J./Notre Dame) each finished the afternoon with two goals and an assist.
 
First-year Jared Tavernite (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) notched a season-best nine face-off wins to lead Susquehanna at the X, winning 9-of-16 face-offs with 11 ground balls.
 
Four different River Hawks scooped up three ground balls a piece, including Dick and Prum, while senior defenseman Michael Jentsch, Jr. (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) and Dick each had two caused turnovers. In his second straight start, junior Daniel Clendenny (Randolph, N.J./Morris Catholic) made a career-best 12 saves and had two ground balls in SU's first victory of 2021.
 
Sophomore attackman Craig Wilkie put up four points on a goal and three assists while Larmore and first-year midfielder Brett Spafford each had two goals. Senior midfielder Miles Savage won 12-of-22 face-offs with a game-best four ground balls. Senior goalie Michael McGeeney made nine stops in Drew's second consecutive loss.
