Yarem Notches 100th Hit as Susquehanna Baseball Drops Two at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Peter Yarem (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) collected his 100th career hit in the nightcap at The Catholic University of America Saturday afternoon. Susquehanna (7-10, 7-7 LC) dropped both to Catholic (11-9, 11-9 LC), falling 9-0 and 6-5 in Landmark Conference action.
 
GAME 1
How It Happened
Catholic notched three runs in the third, three in the fifth, and three more in the sixth to snap its three-game skid. Ben Nardi's two-RBI triple highlighted the Cardinals' third inning while Nicholas Torroella's bases-loaded hit by pitch brought in the hosts' fifth run. Tighe Watson hit a one-out RBI double and Derek Zelesnick connected on a two-RBI single to spark Catholic's final three runs.
 
Tucker Alch sat down the River Hawks' lineup in order during the second, fifth, and sixth innings in preserving the shutout victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
Susquehanna mustered up six hits with four errors in its second straight loss while leaving four on base. This is the second consecutive game that the River Hawks have been shut out. The Cardinals notched nine runs on eight hits with no errors and stranded seven on base.
 
Top Performers
Yarem went 2-for-3 to lead Susquehanna at the plate while first-year Teagan Duffie (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone Area) was saddled with his first loss of the season, throwing 3.0 innings with three strikeouts and giving up three runs (all earned) on six hits. Classmate Brice Gregory (Abingdon, Md./Concordia Prep) pitched 1.0 inning of hitless relief with one strikeout while sophomore Cole Bernier (Bellefonte, Pa./St. Joseph's Catholic Academy) also struck out three in the final 2.0 innings.
 
Nolan Lundholm paced the Cardinals at the plate with a 3-for-4 day and two runs scored while Alch nearly went the distance in improving to 5-0 on the season, scattering six hits and fanning four batters in 6.2 innings.
 
GAME 2
How It Happened
The Cardinals staked an early 2-0 lead on Lundholm's RBI double and Billy Duke's RBI ground out in the bottom of the first inning.
 
Susquehanna responded with four runs with two outs on the scoreboard in the top of the second. First-year Michael Mancuso (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) hit an RBI single followed by a bases-loaded balk to score first-year Kris Morrow (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and tie the game at 2-2. Fifth-year senior Craig Roumes (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) then connected on a two-RBI single for the 4-2 SU lead. After Cormac Terry relieved Nick Marini on the pitching mound, Terry notched the final out with a ground out.
 
The River Hawks claimed a 5-2 lead in the fourth on Yarem's 100th career hit. Yarem collected his milestone hit with a one-out double to bring home fifth-year senior Alec Ranck (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley).
 
Catholic put up three runs in the home half of the fourth to even up the score once again at 5-all.
 
After Terry retired the SU side in order in the top of the fifth, the Cardinals notched the eventual game-winning run in their half of the fifth as Matt Tesoriero's RBI double scored Zelesnick, who hit a lead-off single.
 
The River Hawks were limited to three walks over the final two innings.

The River Hawks tallied five runs on five hits with one error and left nine on base. Catholic put up six scores on 10 hits with no errors and stranded eight on base.
 
Top Performers
Five different River Hawks notched a hit, including Yarem finishing the nightcap, 1-for-3, for his 100th career hit, while Roumes drove in two runs. Junior Jake Ramezzana (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) took the loss on the mound with 2.0 innings of relief, giving up an earned run on three hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore Dominic Yeager (Reading, Pa./Reading) got the start and struck out a career-best six batters in 3.1 innings of work in a no-decision.
 
Three different Catholic players tallied two hits in the second game victory while Watson had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Terry (2-1) earned the win with 5.1 innings of relief, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run on three hits.
