SELINGSGROVE, PA (September 15, 2021) – In a rain delayed and rain soaked night, the River Hawks offense came ready to play against the Wilkes University Colonels on Wednesday night. The Susquehanna University men's soccer team scored a season high four goals, as four different individuals recorded scores during the nightcap.
The River Hawks began their night taking an early lead, in the 10
th minute, as
Joe Armstrong was able to pick up a loose ball to score the first goal of the game, giving him his second goal on the season. However, not long after, the Colonels tied it up with a goal from Andrew Reichard. The ball was deflected by a couple of Susquehanna defender, but it did not deter the flight of ball, resulting in a goal and a tie game.
In the 16
th minute, the River Hawks struck again, as
Adrian Dilascio booted a long pass that curved directly towards the goal, right in the cut towards the goal from senior captain
Brian McKee, who guided the ball into the net for his first goal of the season. The lead would be held on to by the Susquehanna defense, as they carried a 2-1 advantage into the break.
With a one goal lead, it was clear SU would want to add to their advantage. Just four minutes into the second half, the Hawks got their chance as
Max Paczewski had a break away from Wilkes defense, with just himself and the Colonel goalie. Paczewski finished easily against the goalie, creating a nice cushion for the River Hawks.
With the rain beginning to come down and the time running out for Wilkes, the Colonels were able to find their top scorer, Xavier Guerreiro for his fourth goal of the season, cutting the lead back to just one goal with 20 minutes to play.
That would be all that the River Hak defense would allow for the remainder of the game, as the back line remained strong for Susquehanna. The River Hawks were finally able to put the finsihing touches on their win in the 80
th minute, when Armstrong found Oliver Mathieu with an empty net in front of him for Mathieu's first career goal.
With a two goal lead and just 10 minutes to go, the defense was able to dig their heels in and hold strong, clinching their second win on the year.
