Volleyball Falls to #1 Johns Hopkins in Closely Contested Match

BALTIMORE, MD (September 17, 2021) – Susquehanna's Volleyball team lost a closely contested match to the #1 team in the nation, Johns Hopkins University, late on Friday night. The team lost three of four sets, but played close with the Blue Jays throughout the matchup.

The first set saw the River Hawks take a 25-20 victory, starting the game with an early 11-4 lead. John Hopkins came within two, making it a 14-12 game in the middle of the match, but Susquehanna was able to pull away for the first set victory. The second set was close early, with the Blue Jays holding an 11-10 lead midway through. However the rest of the match was all Johns Hopkins, as they finished the second frame on a 14-7 run.

The final two sets saw the River Hawks hold late leads, but the Blue Jays had big runs in both competitions to take home victories. Late in the third set, Susquehanna held a 19-17 lead, but Johns Hopkins finished the game on an 8-0 run to stun the Hawks. The next set was eerily similar as Susquehanna once again held a late two-point lead, this time at 21-19, as the River Hawks were on the verge of forcing a fifth and decisive final set. However, the Blue Jays were once again able to finish on a scoring run, ending the game on a 6-0 streak to seal the win and remain undefeated.

Riley O'Dowd led the team with 19 kills and a hitting percentage at 27% over four sets. Rosina Esposito added 13 kills and 20 digs in the losing effort. Lizzie Herestofa contributed 32 digs and five assists and Madison Rockey was giving out assists left and right as she recorded 37 on the night.

Other Notes
  • The teams were almost even in every category as each team had 49 kills, 12 blocks, and 86 digs. Susquehanna had the advantage in assists, 47-46, and Johns Hopkins had the advantage in points, 70-64, and aces, 9-3. The River Hawks had 28 errors, compared to the Blue Jays 25.
  • Susquehanna matched up with their former Landmark Conference Player of the Year, Sydney Portale, on Friday night, as she recorded nine kills against her former school. The ex-River Hawk joined the Blue Jays with her remaining year of eligibility granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
