SELINGSGROVE, PA (September 18, 2021) – The Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team fell to York College (PA) on Saturday afternoon, 1-0. The Spartans dominated the ball the majority of the game, and were able to get off a number of shots on goal throughout the affair.
York was able to control the ball on their half of the field throughout the first half, as the River Hawks were not able to attempt a shot until well after the 69
th minute. The defense for Susquehanna was put to work the entire game as they had to try and stop the Spartan offensive attack.
The only goal of the game came in the 18
th minute from York senior Caitlyn Findlay. Findlay slipped through the River Hawk defense and received a pass from Alyssa Russell for a great look at the net. The senior connected, scoring what would be the game's only goal.
The River Hawks struggled to get looks throughout the game, as they only attempted three shots in the entire game. The best look may have come at the end of the game, as
Emily Wertz dribbled up the right side of the field with the ball and the defenders sagging off of her. With about ten seconds left, the junior ripped a shot that sailed just high, ending the game in favor of the Spartans.
Carlie Marquette was tested constantly throughout her 90 minutes of play, as she accumulated 12 saves over the 90 minute affair, in her first start of the season.
Other Notes
- Mikela Florio and Gillian Maack both attempted shots in the game, leading the offense in the non-conference affair.
- Despite the large shot discrepancy, corner kicks were even at four a piece for each team. Susquehanna picked up all four of their corner chances in the second half.
Up Next
- The team will return to Sassafras Field on Wednesday September 22nd, for a non-conference matchup with Lycoming at 7 p.m. The team will then begin their conference schedule on Saturday, September 25th, when they travel to Scranton.
