SELINSGROVE, PA - The Women's Soccer team overpowered the Lycoming Warriors with their strong offensive attack in a 5-1 win, winning the River Derby for the seventh straight season. The game was played in less-than optimal conditions as rain fall fell on the field throughout the game. In the second half, the rainfall turned into a downpour, creating almost impossible conditions for each team.
Luckily for the River Hawks, almost all of their damage was down in the first half, as they scored early and often. The scoring got started for Susquehanna when
Avery Francis found
Anna Werner streaking down the middle of the box to take the lead, three minutes into the game. Only four minutes later,
Emily Wertz found
Marley Clendenin on a corner kick and Clendenin found the back of the net for the eventual game deciding goal.
The scoring didn't stop there, as Francis once again found a teammate, this time
Cierra Getz, with a cross that deflected off a Lycoming player and right to Getz for great look at the goal. Getz placed the shot well out of the reach of the Warrior keeper, extending the lead to 3-0 in the 17th minute. The first half scoring was capped off by a goal from
Juliana DeGeorge, who was assisted by
Emily Wertz. The goals were the first of the SU careers of both Getz and DeGeorge.
In the second half, the pace of the game changed, likely as a result of the horrendous conditions of the game. Still, the River Hawks were able to add another goal to their total as Wertz connected on a goal of her own, with
Gillian Maack providing a beautiful ball ahead of the Lycoming defense for a breakaway score in the 61st minute.
Lycoming was finally able to get their own goal in the 81st minute when Bella Green connected on her ninth goal of the season.
