Second-Half Rally Leads Alvernia to Victory Over Men's Soccer

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Alvernia University Golden Wolves defeated Susquehanna University's Men's Soccer Team on Tuesday night, as two second-half goals gave them a 2-1 win. Joe Armstrong scored the lone goal for the River Hawks, off an assist from fellow senior and captain, Brian McKee.

Susquehanna was the first team to get on the board, as they scored a goal in the fifth minute of the game, gaining a very early advantage. The goal came on a pass from McKee, who led Armstrong perfectly to the right hand side of the box. Armstrong then was able to get past his defender with a quick burst, leaving just the goalie in front of him. The senior midfielder then placed a strike in the opposite corner of the goal, resulting in an early River Hawk lead.

The rest of the first half was a defensive stalemate, as only five total shots were attempted in the entire half, three for Susquehanna and two for Alvernia. The Golden Wolves seemed to have the advantage in possessing the ball, but were not able to muster any clean looks at the goal. Santiago Andino helped to thwart the Alvernia offensive attack, with an aggressive approach in goal, as he was consistently meeting the ball at the top of the box, punching away potential passes or receiving crosses high in the box to prohibit the Golden Wolves from getting their offense going.

That all changed after the break as Alvernia ended up getting off 10 shots in the second half. The shots finally came to fruition for the Golden Wolves when Ryan Cogill tied the game in the 66th minute. The shots kept coming for Alvernia and they finally were able to take the lead in the 82nd minute as Cameron Rowe connected on the game winner.

The Susquehanna offense struggled to get anything going in the second half as they were unable to get any good looks at the net or consistent ball movement, attempting only one shot over the entire half. Max Paczewski attempted two shots on the night, while Oliver Mathieu attempted the only other shot.

Other Notes
  • Andino was able to stop three Golden Wolf shot attempts on the night, accumulating three saves in his first career start.
  • After each team failed to earn a corner kick in the first half, Alvernia was awarded six in the second half, while Susquehanna only kicked from the corner once.
Up Next
  • The River Hawks will open up conference play this weekend on Saturday, September 25th, when they head to Scranton for a 4 p.m. match.
