SELINSGROVE, PA (September 22, 2021) --
Ashley Schreffler potted a pair of goals and first-year
Rebecca Ripans added another as the No. 17 Susquehanna University field hockey continued its best start in program history with a 3-1 win over York College (Pa.) in non-conference action from Sassafras Field Wednesday evening.
The River Hawks (6-0), who moved up to No. 17 this week in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, played well throughout the first half but wouldn't find the breakthrough until the second quarter.
In the 22nd minute, Susquehanna opened the scoring on a strong corner play, as Schreffler collected a loose ball off a deflected pass and shoveled it home for the 1-0 lead. It was Schreffler's second of the season. That's how things would be stay into halftime, as SU led in shot attempts 3-1 at the break.
The third quarter was the best period of the game for the hosts, as Susquehanna got two amazing goals to take a 3-0 lead. At 35:33 the River Hawks doubled their lead as Schreffler batted a pass out of midair from
Cassie West with her best Aaron Judge impression, hammering home into the netting for a 2-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later, Ripans tallied her second of the season in transition as
Sam Banks broke through the defense on the left side. Banks would fire a drive in on net and Ripans deflected the shot at waist level past Kaitlyn Wallace to put the River Hawks three goals clear of York.
The visiting Spartans started to put some pressure on Susquehanna in the fourth quarter, and got one back at 53:02 as Maggie Spadafora dished a loose ball off the post and Sam Collis knocked it in to make it 3-1. That's as close as the Spartans would get though, as York suffered its first loss of the season.
Both teams fired seven shots on the night, with SU holding a 6-3 edge in shots on goals. York had a slight 8-6 advantage in penalty corners, and Wallace and
Mackenzie Bross each had two saves for their respective teams.
