#17 Field Hockey Falls to Scranton in Opening Game of Landmark Conference Play

SELINGSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna University Field Hockey endured their first loss since November 9th, 2019, losing to the Scranton University Royals by a score of 3-0. Katie Redding tallied all three goals for the Royals, nearly doubling her season total with the hat trick.

The Royals were able to control the game for the majority of the first half, keeping possession of the ball and halting any River Hawk attempts at creating offense. The first half penalty corner and shot advantages went to Scranton, 4-2 and 4-3 respectively, as they entered halftime with a 2-0 lead.

The first score from the Royals came in the 16th minute as Katie Redding made her way through the Susquehanna defense to score an unassisted goal, her fifth goal of the season. She followed up that act by scoring five minutes later off a penalty stroke, hammering a shot home to give the Royals a two score advantage. Redding would add to that tally in the second half, completing the hat trick with a goal at the 37th minute, assisted by Elle Collins.

For the River Hawks, Lydia Hidlay, Rebecca Ripans, and Ashley Schreffler each tallied shots on goal in the loss. Annalee Smith had two shots that were on target as well, but all were stopped by Scranton goalie Clare Maguire, who had five saves on the day. Susquehanna ended up with a large advantage in corners but couldn't get their shots to fall against a strong Royal defense that has allowed just one goal through seven games.

Other Notes
  • Mackenzie Bross finished with one save in goal, in her first loss of the season.
  • Over the course of the game, Scranton and Susquehanna were even with shots and shots on goal, but the Royals were able to get three shots past the River Hawk goal keeper to obtain the win.
Up Next
  • The Field Hockey team will remain at home for their next game on Tuesday, September 28th, when they welcome the Misericordia Cougars to Sassafras Field at 7 p.m. The Cougars lead the all-time series 4-2 over the River Hawks.
