SCRANTON, PA - The Susquehanna University Women's Soccer team took their first loss of Landmark Conference play, falling to the Scranton University Royals 2-1. The Royals have won 13 of the last 15 matches against Susquehanna with the last SU win coming in October of 2019.
The River Hawks were able to get on the board first to start the scoring when
Emily Wertz was able to burst through the Scranton defense and give an excellent pass to
Anna Werner just ahead of her defender. Werner then took a shot from way out on the right side of the field, and was able to get the ball just past the outstretched keeper as the ball ricocheted off the post into the net.
The lead was short lived, however, as Jessica Letherbarrow scored her second goal of the season unassisted, brining the game to halftime with the score tied at one.
The game remained tied for over 15 minutes into the second half when the Royals finally broke through to take their first lead of the game in the 62nd minute. Mary Haggerty scored the goal for Scranton, assisted by Emily Bannon, registering the would-be game-winner.
In the final 28 minutes, Wertz and Werner each had a good look at the goal, but were not able to get the shot past the Scranton keeper.
Other Notes
- Chloe Wieczkowski posted three saves in goal, as the loss pulled her record to even at 3-3 on the season.
- Scranton held the advantage in shots on the afternoon, posting 12 shots and five on goal, while Susquehanna posted eight with four on goal.
- Susquehanna earned four corners in the second half but were not able to take advantage of the chances, going goalless in the second half.
