Field Hockey Falls to Misericordia in Overtime

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Susquehanna University Field Hockey team lost just their second game of the season on Tuesday night, falling to the Misericordia Cougars 1-0 in OT. The Cougars scored just two and half minutes into the extra period to take home the win.

Regulation was a defensive battle between the two teams, as the game was dominated by defensive stands and missed opportunities on offense. The whistle also played a big part in the game as the offenses' attack was often thwarted by fouls.

The first shot of the game didn't occur until 13 minutes into the game when an Abbey Reist shot was blocked by Misericordia. The first corner for the Cougars came in the 18th minutes and the first came for Susquehanna in the 27th. At halftime, there were two total corners, and two total shots between both teams.

In the second half, it was more of the same, as corners and shots were hard to come by for each team. Misericordia had a golden opportunity in the 39th minute, as the team was awarded a penalty stroke when the Susquehanna goalie came out to meet a stray ball and inadvertently tripped a Cougar player. Anna Effinger was chosen to take the shot and missed wide left, keeping the game tied.

In the ensuing minutes, both teams struggled to get good looks at the net, either by strong defensive play, or the inability to get the ball moving up the field. However, this changed when the final horn of regulation sounded, as the overtime period, played with just seven players on each side, was moving at a much faster pace.

Misericordia was able to take advantage of the faster play early in the period, earning themselves a corner just two and half minutes in. After the insert, Morgan Walsh found Effinger, who more than made up for the missed penalty stroke, as she slapped the shot in for the win.

The loss was the second in a row for Susquehanna, who took their first loss of the season this past Saturday to conference foe Scranton University. On Tuesday, Katie Bucher recorded two shots, while Annalee Smith and Reist recorded one as well. Cassie West took the only shot on goal in the loss.

Other Notes
  • Misericordia earned seven corners over the course of the game, including the one that won the game in overtime. Susquehanna was able to earn just three, with just one occurring in the first three quarters.
