SELINSGROVE, PA (September 25, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University men's tennis team saw its three-match win streak to start the 2021-22 season come to an end Saturday as visiting Lebanon Valley College topped the River Hawks 6-3 in play from the SU Courts.
In doubles, Susquehanna (3-1) started quickly as
Joshua Sanderson and
John Duncan got things going with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Lebanon Valley tied it up at No. 1 doubles but the River Hawks responded with another 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles thanks to the play from
Tim Basta and
Ethan Cooley to head into singles with the lead.
The individual play though would be tight but not in the favor of the River Hawks, as Basta fell to Brendan Byler at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match at two. Sanderson won by retirement at No. 2 singles to put SU back up 3-2, but a tight match between Justin Schuetz and Emil Vyskovil at No. 1 went to way of the visitors with scores of 7-5, 6-2.
With the match tied at three, Adam Warren of LVC topped Duncan 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to push the Dutchmen (3-0) to within one of the victory. That win would come at No. 5 singles, as Brady McLucas topped Cooley in three sets. McLucas earned the first set 6-2, but Cooley came back with a 6-3 second set win to tie the match. In the super-tiebreaker, McLucas outlasted Cooley 10-5 to give LVC the team victory.
