Koch's Goal Leads Field Hockey to Win Over Albright

SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna University Field Hockey team jumped back into the win column Thursday night as an excellent defensive game propelled the team to a 1-0 win over Albright College. Katie Koch tallied the game winner, as the defense needed just the one goal to clinch the win.

The lone goal was scored by Koch, assisted by Allyson Heard, in the 16th minute after two failed corner attempts. The River Hawks had consecutive corners where a shot was blocked or save to start the second quarter, but the team was able to retain possession after the shot attempts. After the ball was moved back into the box, Ashley Schreffler took a shot that was saved by the Albright goalie. The shot deflected to Heard, who was able to find Koch allowing the senior to put the shot into the back of the net for the lead. The goal was the second of the season for Koch and the assist was the first of the season for Heard.

That would be all the scoring the Susquehanna defense needed, as they prohibited the Albright offense from taking a single shot all evening. The offense was able to control the ball throughout the game, but any time the Lions were able to get the ball over midfield, the River Hawk defense thwarted the Albright attack.

Susquehanna held the advantage in both shots and corners handily, as they out-shot the Lions 13-0, with nine of those shots on goal, and held an 8-1 advantage in corners. Throughout the night the ball movement was crisp from the River Hawk offense, as they were able to keep the ball away from the defense and attacking the goal, as they continuously drew corners and received good looks at the net.

Mackenzie Bross earned her seventh win and fourth shutout, in the 1-0 win. The junior goalie benefited greatly from the River Hawk back line, as she did not face a single shot attempt throughout the 60 minutes of regulation.

Other Notes
  • Schreffler and Annalee Smith each tallied three shots, with two on goal, while Kari Schmidt also had two shots on goal, including a penalty stroke that was saved by the Albright goalie.
Up Next
  • The River Hawks head to Madison, NJ on Saturday, October 2nd, as they take on Drew in a Landmark Conference match at 1 p.m. The team will be looking to add their first conference win of the year against a Drew team that has lost to Susquehanna in six straight games.
