Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Caleb Philips

River Hawks Field Hockey Continue Best Start of Fordyce's Tenure

Selinsgrove, Pa. – In a five-year span that has seen a Landmark Conference championship and back-to-back conference championship appearances, the Susquehanna University Field Hockey team continued their best start to a season since Allison Fordyce took over the team in 2017, winning their third straight game, over Dickinson College. Ashley Schreffler (Rebuck, PA/Line Mountain) scored off a rebounded shot in the final period to give the River Hawks the lead and eventual victory.

The game began with beautiful skies and sunny weather but after the first quarter of play, a storm was on the horizon and the game was delayed for almost an hour before both teams returned to the field. After that, the game was met with wet conditions on the Sassafras field turf and gloomy skies.

Once resumed, the game was controlled throughout by the Susquehanna offense, as they were able to get off 11 shots, nine of which were on goal. They were able to keep the ball on the Dickinson side of the field for most of the evening, as they were also awarded seven corners. Dickinson was only able to get off two shots, as the back line of the River Hawk defense held strong, helping Mackenzie Bross (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge), the reigning NFHCA Defensive Player of the Week, earn her second shutout.

The game deciding goal was scored in the 46th minute by Schreffler who was able to redirect a saved shot into the back net, giving Susquehanna the advantage. The goal was the first of the sophomore's collegiate career and helped clinch the win for the River Hawks.

Other Notes
  • Cassie West (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg Area) took three shots, all on goal, to help lead the offensive strike for Susquehanna.
  • The River Hawks had nine shots on goal versus the Red Devils' one. SU also held a 7-2 advantage on corners.
  • Bross earned her third win and second shutout with her 60 minutes in the net. She picked up one save on the evening.
Up Next
  • Susquehanna Field Hockey will continue their home stand to start the season when they welcome Albright College to town on Saturday, September 11th at 1 p.m.
