SELINSGROVE, PA (January 8, 2022) -- Senior point guard
Danny Frauenheim scored a career-high 33 points, adding five steals as the Susquehanna University men's basketball team outlasted visiting Catholic University in Landmark Conference play from O.W. Houts Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Frauenheim broke his previous personal-best of 25 points set back on September 8, 2021 at Elizabethtown College in the Landmark Conference opener. On the season, Frauenheim is averaging 29 points and 7.5 assists in conference play so far. Susquehanna (10-3, 2-0 Landmark) has now won five in a row, along with seven of its last eight contests.
The River Hawks appeared to have the game in control late in regulation, leading by eight points with 44 seconds to play after free throws by junior
Dominic Dunn. Following a traditional three-point play by Catholic, Susquehanna missed two free throws and Jesse Hafemeister hit a three-pointer to make it a two-point game at 84-82 in favor of the River Hawks. Junior
Quincy Haughton make one-of-two at the line for Susquehanna with 20 seconds to go, but Tommy Kelly rattled home a game-tying three for CUA with nine seconds left to deadlock the game at 85. On the next possession, SU was unable to get a shot off as the contest went to overtime.
In the extra period Dunn put the River Hawks up three on a three-pointer with just over four minutes to play, a lead that SU would hold the rest of the extra session. The River Hawks surrendered just two buckets in the overtime period, sealing the game at the line to earn the conference victory. Frauenheim went 11-of-19 from the floor, drilling six-of-nine from deep on the way to his career high. Yurasits had a crucial 20 points as well, connecting on six of his nine field goals.
Senior
Jay Martin added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Dunn finished with 15 points and four boards. Haughton added a career-high of 13 points, making his first start of the season. Susquehanna. Susquehanna shot 47 percent (31-66) from the floor on the night, going 13-of-30 from behind the arc (43.3 percent). SU was also strong at the free throw line, making 23 of its 30 attempts at the charity stripe.
Kelly paced the Cardinals (8-3, 1-1 Landmark) finished with a team-best 30 points, while Hafemeister tallied 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Jake Timby totaled 12 points, and Jake Melady came off the bench to score 13 points. CUA shot 51.6 percent on the night, while going 17-of-19 (89.5 percent) from the line.
Catholic led for the majority of the first half, taking its biggest advantage of the game at 41-29 after a jumper by Hafemeister with 2:26 to go in the opening stanza. Frauenheim scored the game's next nine points to make it a three-point edge for the Cardinals at the break. The second half was back-and-forth, featuring 26 lead changes and eight ties before the exciting finish.
