BETHLEHEM, PA (October 1, 2022) – The Susquehanna Men's Soccer team traveled to face Moravian University on Saturday afternoon for their second Landmark Conference match of the 2022 season. The River Hawks would ultimately fall 2-0 in the game, suffering their sixth loss of the season.
Moravian took control from the early goings, tallying their first shot less than a minute into the game and continuing to put on pressure throughout. The Greyhounds would have seven shots in the first half, while SU would produce just one in that period, that one being a shot on goal by Michael Morelli in the 15th minute which was saved. Meanwhile, Moravian would force a save from first-year goalkeeper Tony Burns and have another shot hit the crossbar before breaking through with the opening goal in the 43rd minute. Finding a chance on a throw-in the offensive end, they would play a ball over the top of the defense that the striker would latch onto and put into the top left corner.
The second half saw Susquehanna come out with more vigor and proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Owen Healey forced a save with a shot just over a minute into the second half, before Moravian would turn the ball back the other way and get off a shot on goal of their own, with Burns making the save. Shots stayed in favor of Moravian but would be a closer 9-8, while the Greyhounds' keeper was forced to make five saves in the half to keep SU off the board.
The end of the game saw Moravian string together a few chances in a row, with two corner kicks and three shots that missed the goal in the last ten minutes of the game before they scored their insurance goal in the 86th minute, burying a free kick goal from just outside the box.
Despite the scoreline, Susquehanna put significant pressure on in the second half, ultimately just unable to break through with a goal of their own. They fall to 0-6-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the Landmark Conference, still searching for the fixture that garners their first victory of the season. They'll return home on Wednesday, October 5 to host Gettysburg College in a non-conference match at 7 pm, before hitting the road again next Saturday, October 8 for their next Landmark match, visiting Goucher College at 1 pm.
