SELINSGROVE, PA (October 15, 2022) – On the back of a five-game road trip that made up the heart of their shutout win streak, Susquehanna women's soccer returned home on Saturday afternoon to host the Cardinals of Catholic University in their third straight Landmark Conference match. That shutout streak continued and reached a historic milestone as SU won 1-0 over Catholic and saw the streak reach 10 straight shutouts, a program record.
The only goal of the game came early, as in the fifth minute of the game a beautiful ball played over the top of the right side of the Catholic defense by Ellie Betheil put Emily Wertz in on goal, where she fired home to give Susquehanna the lead and tally her sixth goal of the campaign.
Beyond that, the game was a gritty defensive struggle, with Susquehanna mustering only six total shots, a total far lower than the typical output for SU. Catholic had five of their own, only one of which was on goal and forced a save from SU goalkeeper Paisley Tornatore. The first-year was up to the task and earned her eighth shutout of the season, leading the conference in the metric.
Susquehanna forced two saves, one in each half. The first half saw Cierra Getz rip a low shot from outside the box in the 32nd minute, which the Catholic keeper would get hands on to keep out of the bottom left corner of the goal. The second half would see a chance for SU from a corner kick, as Gillian Maack shot toward the bottom left corner, again seeing that spot covered off by the Cardinal keeper.
Now 12-3 overall and 5-0 in the Landmark Conference, Susquehanna sits tied for first with Scranton atop the Landmark. They'll get their chance to break the tie in their final home game of the regular season on Saturday, October 22, as they host the Royals for a 4 pm kickoff and will also celebrate Senior Day. Before then, they'll hit the road on Wednesday, October 19 for a date with non-conference opponent Muhlenberg College, kicking off at 7 pm.
