Bucher's Late Winner Gives FH Sixth-Straight Victory

READING, PA (October 4, 2022) – The Susquehanna field hockey team extended their win streak to six games in dramatic fashion on Tuesday evening, with a late goal giving them a 1-0 victory over Alvernia University.

The two teams were evenly matched for much of the proceedings, trading shots and saves throughout. With the score remaining knotted at zero for more than 55 minutes, the excitement was packed into the waning moments.

Susquehanna was put on the back foot when Sophia Prata was given a yellow card and the River Hawks were left short-handed. Despite the disadvantage, SU forced a penalty corner and Katie Bucher unleashed a powerful shot. Alvernia's goalkeeper would produce a stunning save with her foot, nearly going into a split to keep the shot out. However, Bucher would get the job done at the second time of asking, as the following corner was again put in by Annalee Smith and Bucher launched a second wicked bender, this time beating the outstretched arm of the keeper and burying into the right side of the net.

The slender lead would be under threat for the remaining few minutes, as Alvernia pushed for an equalizing goal. It was not to be though, as despite forcing two late penalty corners and a save from Mackenzie Bross, they could not break through the back line or past Bross.

Susquehanna earned their ninth victory, sixth win in a row, and third shutout in a row with their victory. Now 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Landmark Conference, their next match will see them return to friendly confines, hosting Landmark opponent Goucher College on Saturday, October 8 at 1 pm, with a chance to continue their win streaks and potentially start 3-0 in the Landmark for the first time in program history.
