Women's Soccer Puts Up Eighth Straight Shutout, Moves to 3-0 in Landmark Play

TOWSON, MD (October 8, 2022) – Susquehanna Women's soccer made the fourth stop of their five-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, hitting the road to face Landmark Conference opponent Goucher College. The River Hawks would earn their eighth straight shutout victory of the season with a 2-0 win over the Gophers.

SU was firing well on offense from the opening whistle, churning out a heft 12 shots in the first half alone. Goucher's defense and keeper would prove up to the challenge in the early goings however, making six saves and keeping the match scoreless into the halftime break.

The breakthrough came for the River Hawks just a few minutes into the second half, as a corner kick presented a great scoring chance. Emily Wertz would take the corner short, playing it right to Ellie Betheil, who launched a ball into the box that managed to clear everyone, including the goalkeeper, and buried itself in the net to give SU the 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.

The second goal would see the River Hawks again unlock the Goucher defense on a corner kick. Wertz would put this one into the box herself, perfectly finding the head of senior Gillian Maack, who nodded it on to the far post where Marley Clendenin was positioned to head the ball home and double SU's advantage.

While not tested often, Susquehanna goalkeeper Paisley Tornatore did make saves on all three of the Gophers' shots on goal to keep them off the board and tally a remarkable sixth shutout of the season as a first-year keeper. The total also has her leading the conference, while she is second in goals against average and save percentage. Meanwhile, with Wertz's assist total up to six, she sits tied atop the conference. The River Hawks goalscoring also has several individuals well placed among the conference leaders, with Clendenin, Maack, and Mikela Florio all tied for the team lead in goals with five, also tying the three of them for third in the conference. Wertz follows behind with four goals, while Delaney Morton rounds out the conference top ten with three goals on the season.

The final stop on the road trip for the River Hawks will see them visit another Landmark opponent as they travel to Huntingdon, PA to face Juniata College. The Eagles have begun conference play 0-3, falling to Moravian, Elizabethtown, and Catholic. They'll kick off there on Wednesday, October 12 at 7 pm.
