Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

River Hawks Fall to E-Town in Landmark Opener

SELINSGROVE, PA (December 3, 2022) – The Susquehanna women's basketball team began their Landmark Conference play for the season on Saturday afternoon as they hosted the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College. The Blue Jays came to town in good form, having started the season 5-0, and continued their streak with a 70-53 win over SU. Susquehanna falls to 3-4 on the young season.

The two teams jockeyed for momentum in the opening quarter as the offenses looked to find some stability in a very fast-paced contest. Possessions swapped often and it was SU who took the early advantage, leading for most of the quarter and ending the frame with a 14-9 lead. Shooting was a struggle for both teams at various points in the game, but particularly early on as E-Town shot 26.7 percent in the first quarter while SU put up a mark of 33.3.

Momentum would shift massively in the second quarter, as Elizabethtown improved shooting and began to force their way to the foul line, outscoring SU 25-9 in the period to make the score 34-23 in their favor at halftime. The Blue Jays would total 29 free throw attempts in the game, with 13 of those coming in just the second period. In contrast, the River Hawks attempted only 10, making six of them in the game.

That physical battle would continue into the second half as was reflected in the rebounding battle as well, as E-Town had a 41-36 advantage in the statistic and grabbed a hefty 22 offensive rebounds, translating to 24 second chance points.

Susquehanna would enter the fourth quarter down 18 points but fought hard to get back into the contest, scoring their game-high 24 points in the period and shooting a remarkable 71.43 percent from the field after having had their game-low of 23.08 in the third quarter. Kaitlyn Lynch in particular would have a strong quarter, scoring 14 of her team-leading 22 total points. However, the Blue Jays would do their best to match that output and scored 23 points of their own as the defenses struggled to shut down the respective streaking offenses. As a result, SU would still end the game behind by 17, unable to surmount the scoring advantage at the free throw line despite only being outshot from the floor by .1 percent and matching Elizabethtown from beyond the arc with five makes.

First-year Julia Pinckert would be the only other River Hawk to score in double-digits, tallying 11 points and leading the team in assists with four. Lynch also led the team in rebounding with 9, along with tying with Kenzie Selvaggi in steals with three each.

SU will get to remain at home and look to get back to .500 on the season on Wednesday evening as they welcome Dickinson College to Selinsgrove for a non-conference matchup. That game will tipoff at 7 pm.
