NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Three costly errors in game two of the weekend trip to Christopher Newport proved to be too much to overcome for Susquehanna baseball on Saturday. The three errors led to eight unearned runs, which was more than enough to pull away from the River Hawks.
After a 1-2-3 first inning from starter
Teagan Duffie, an error and a walk to start the second inning set the table for trouble for Susquehanna. An infield single then loaded the bases with no outs, allowing the Captains to score the first unearned run on a fielder's choice. After a single through the left side, another Susquehanna error allowed a run to score for CNU, and the wheels continued to come off for the River Hawks as the Captains piled on. Despite scoring seven runs in the inning, just one was earned.Â
With a 7-0 lead in the second, the Captains were able to cruise to a victory, as their pitchers combined for nine innings of one unearned run and 14 strikeouts. Â
Aidan Martin looked very good in relief for the River Hawks, putting up four consecutive zeroes before being removed from the game. The sophomore was able to work around four walks by striking out five and allowing just one hit.Â
Martin was relived by
Vin Mariella, who made his collegiate debut by throwing two innings, giving up one earned run. The first-year struck out four batters in his first inning, a rare feet in any case, and one even rarer for a first-year player in their first career inning.
Offensively
Thomas Romanelli was a bright spot, as the sophomore collected the only multi-hit day for SU.
Sean McCulloch picked up his second hit of the year and stole a base, and
Evan Knapp also recorded a base hit.Â
