Women's Lacrosse Rallies For Wild 16-15 Comeback Win At Marymount

ARLINGTON, VA (February 23, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team outscored their hosts Marymount University 4-1 in the decisive fourth quarter, rallying to earn a thrilling 16-15 road victory in non-conference play Wednesday evening. 

The River Hawks (1-1) trailed the entire game until the fourth quarter, but first-year Allie Kutler scored off a feed from senior Caroline Chase to knot the game at 14 with 8:53 to play. Minutes later, Heather Riefenhauser scored unassisted to give SU its first lead of the game at 15-14 before potting another goal less than two minutes later to make it 16-14. Marymount (1-2) responded with 3:06 to play to make it 16-15, and had a chance to tie the game with 31 seconds left but Sarah Agrillo had her shot blocked as SU held on for the victory. 

Marymount started the game hot at home, as the Saints netted five of the first six goals before Riefenhauser tallied at 4:31 of the opening stanza to make it 5-2. Chase scored a woman-down goal to make it 5-3, but Marymount netted two more before the end of the period to take a 7-3 lead into the second quarter. SU trimmed its deficit to two on four different occasions in the second quarter, as Kelsey Homberg found the back of the net on an a pass from first-year Liv Owen to make it 10-8 going into the locker rooms. 

After halftime Owen notched her first collegiate score on a set-up by Kutler to make it a one-goal game at 10-9, but the Saints wouldn't give up the lead as SU and MU traded goals late in the third quarter. Leading 14-12 going into the fourth, Homberg started the decisive 4-0 run for the River Hawks that propelled SU to the victory. 

Riefenhauser tied her career-high for points with six, while her five goals Wednesday was a career-high as she fired a team-high 11 shots. Owen had her best game as a River Hawk, posting a goal and four assists for five points, adding three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Chase finished with a pair of goals along with two helpers in the win, Homberg scored four times to go with a team-high seven draw controls, and Caitlin Harvey netted two goals along with five draw controls. 

Kutler had a strong outing as well, as she posted a goal and an assist along with four draw controls for SU, which outshot its host 36-31 on the night. Keeper Emmy Regan stopped 10 shots in the victory for the River Hawks. 

Emily Peters led the way for the Saints with five goals, three ground balls and six draw controls, and Agrillo tallied three goals and an assist as well in the loss.
