Baseball Falls in Pitcher's Duel Against #22 Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA - The Susquehanna University Baseball team fell in a pitcher's duel, as the River Hawks lost to #22 Shenandoah on the road on Sunday afternoon. Kyle Sears turned in an excellent effort on the mound, allowing three unearned runs, scattering six hits while striking out four over six innings of work.

This game was close throughout, as neither team's offense could come through for a huge inning. Shenandoah struck first in the second inning, scoring an unearned run after a runner who had reached on an error, scored with two outs. The River Hawks responded in the fourth when Lance Book and SU performed a suicide squeeze to perfection, knotting the game up at one run apiece.

The Hornets came through in the sixth, as two Susquehanna errors came back to bite the River Hawks very hard. A failed pickoff attempt allowed the go-ahead run to advance to third and set up a squeeze for Shenandoah, which they pulled off to take the lead over SU. After a single and stolen base, another error from Susquehanna allowed the runner to score on the play, extending the lead to 3-1 for the Hornets.

Susquehanna had an excellent shot to respond and tie the game in the eighth after Kris Morrow ripped a two out triple to right field and J.P. Yore singled him home. Evan Knapp followed with a single and Thomas Romanelli drew a walk to load the bases, but the River Hawks could not push another run across.

The River Hawks were able to put the tying run on second base in the ninth, but the Hornet's closer shut the door, stranding the runner there.

Five Susquehanna errors were the downfall of a strong pitching effort, as all three runs scored by Shenandoah were unearned. The River Hawks also stranded eight runners on base, as they had a season high 10 hits.

Morrow had two hits for SU, including his first triple of the year and Evan Knapp added two base hits for Susquehanna. Adam Stuck threw two scoreless innings out of the pen, allowing just one hit.
