River Hawk Women Knock Off Juniata Saturday Afternoon

SELINSGROVE, PA (February 5, 2022) -- Graduate student guard Erin McQuillen was honored pre-game for scoring her 1,000th point back on December 31, and she responded with 18 points Saturday while eclipsing 1,100 points for her career to pace the Susquehanna University women's basketball team to a 60-47 win against Juniata College in Landmark Conference play from O.W. Houts Gymnasium.

The River Hawks (11-9, 3-7 Landmark) snapped a three-game losing skid with the victory, and with the win swept the season series with the Eagles for the second straight season. Susquehanna came out quick Saturday afternoon, leading by 12 after the first 10 minutes after posting a 12-1 run over the final four minutes of the period.

In the second quarter, SU twice had its lead get down to as much as six points, but seven straight points to end the period gave the River Hawks its largest lead of the game at 38-23 going into intermission. After intermission, the River Hawk lead grew as high as 20 points with 6:33 to go in the third quarter on a jumper from Amanda Lemire. Juniata crawled back into the game, as it trimmed SU's advantage down to 13 going into the final 10 minutes.

The Eagles (5-14, 1-8 Landmark) got its deficit under 10 with 7:30 to play after a Haily Sherman layup, but another seven consecutive points from Susquehanna over the next four minutes put the game away. McQuillen led all scorers on the night, going 7-of-11 from the floor, hitting 2-of-4 from deep, while tallying five rebounds. She now has 1,106 points for her career, as she passed Alison Hepler '95 and moved into a tie with Sandy Bartle '86 for seventh all-time in points.

Senior Kaitlyn Lynch also hit five of her eight shots on the afternoon for 11 points, registering four rebounds, and senior Amalia Esposito tallied seven points and a team-best 10 rebounds. Senior Olivia Brandt also finished with eight points and nine rebounds, blocking four shots. Susquehanna shot 21-of-52 (40.4 percent) on field goal attempts, posting a 12-2 edge in fast break points and a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint. The River Hawks led for 38:22 of the 40 minutes Saturday.

Sherman finished with 15 points and five rebounds for the Eagles, while Kynnedy Miller tallied 12 points as well for JC. Juniata also saw Cassie Mock post eight points and eight rebounds, as the Eagles got out-rebounded by Susquehanna 47-38. The Eagles also fired just 25 percent (16-64) from the floor Saturday, tied for the third-lowest shooting percentage by a SU opponent this season.

The win keeps the River Hawks Landmark Conference playoff hopes alive, as SU is two games behind Drew University for the final spot with four games to play in the regular season.
