SELINSGROVE, PA (March 11, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team got a combined 13 goals from the trio of
Hannah McNamara,
Liv Owen and
Heather Riefenhauser, pulling away from visiting Arcadia University in the second half for a 15-8 home victory in action from Sassafras Field Friday evening.
The contest was moved up to Friday evening due to impending weather, after originally being scheduled for Saturday afternoon. SU (4-2) got out to a slow start, as Arcadia (1-5) took the quick lead on a Maddie Ruger goal on a free position attempt two minutes into the contest.
Riefenhauser got Susquehanna on the board at 11:43 of the first quarter, scoring a nice feed from McNamara to deadlock the game at a goal apiece. Minutes later, Owen netted her first of four goals on the day to give the hosts a 2-1 lead, but the Knights tallied 16 seconds later to pull the score even again at 2-2.
The teams exchanged goals over the next 10 minutes of game action, as Tessa O'Donnell of Arcadia made it 4-4 with 8:12 to go in the first half with her first of the season. Riefenhauser would push Susquehanna back on top with back-to-back goals to make it 6-4, and Owen scored unassisted with just over three minutes to go in the first half to make it 7-4 at the break.
The momentum continued in the third quarter, as Susquehanna posted three of the first four goals of the second half, one each by SU's top scoring trio to make it 10-5 with 3:40 left in the third quarter. The trend would continue as Susquehanna pushed its lead up to as much as eight at 15-7 on a goal from
Caitlin Harvey, cruising to the victory.
SU's defense had a nice night, as five different players earned two caused turnovers.
Katie Quackenboss finished with two forced mistakes and a team-high five ground balls, while
Madi Mitchell and
Katie Hoerman each posted three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Mitchell also tallied her first assist of the season, and
Kelsey Homberg finished with three ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Sophomore
Liz Hordesky added two caused turnovers and two loose ball pickups, and
Allie Kutler posted three draw controls. Junior goalkeeper
Emmy Regan finished with 11 saves on 24 shots faced to pick up her fourth win of the year. Offensively, McNamara established a new career-high with six points, also setting a personal-high for goals in a game with five.
Riefenhauser finished with four goals and an assist, posting the fourth game with five or more points this year for SU, while Owen broke her personal-high for goals with four in a five-point night. Senior
Caroline Chase scored once, but played an important role offensively, opening up things for her teammates as AU keyed on her most of the night.
Susquehanna outshot its foes 42-24 for the night, while winning the ground ball edge, 23-10. Susquehanna also had a ton of success on clearing attempts, going 21-of-23 for the night while forcing seven turnovers by the Knights on their clear chances.
Skylar Acker and Ruger each tallied two goals for Arcadia, while Ashley Starkey posted a goal and nine draw controls for the Knights.
