Softball Takes Care of Lynchburg, Marymount In Day 1 At Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD (March 19, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University softball team played its first game in two weeks Saturday, and shook off the rust nicely earning victories over the University of Lynchburg 7-3 before knocking off Marymount University 8-0 in six innings in action from Henry S. Parker Complex.

Game 1: Susquehanna 7, Lynchburg 3
The Susquehanna offense came alive in the first game of the day on Saturday, posting 13 hits to rally for a win over the Hornets.

SU got on the board first thanks to a RBI fielder's choice by Zoe Bork, scoring Kiara Bryant who singled to lead off the inning. Lynchburg came right back in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs, including a lead-off homer by Sophie Tully.

The River Hawks answered with a blast of their own in the top of the fourth inning, as Bork went deep to score Katie Koch who had walked to start the frame. SU added to its lead in the top of the sixth, as Morgan Henry started the rally with a single up the middle. Koch followed with a single, and the two moved up a base on a passed ball.

Nicole Wuertz would come up to pinch-hit for the River Hawks, and she delivered with a single to third base to load the bases. Two batters later, Erin Bean came through with a two-run single to center field, scoring Koch and pinch-runner Hailey Kaba

The River Hawks added on two more in the top of the seventh on a squeeze play from Kaba and a RBI single from Bork to put the game away.

Five SU players had two hits on the game, led by Bork and her 2-for-4 performance, driving in four. Bryant finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Koch was 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Bean added two hits and two RBI, while Henry was 2-for-3 as well. Gabba Bubba started and scattered three hits and two runs over three innings, handing off the ball to Katie Murphy who allowed just one hit over four innings, fanning nine Hornet batters.

Game 2: Susquehanna 8, Marymount 0 (6 innings)
The Susquehanna University pitchers held Marymount to just three hits in the second win of the day, while Bryant was the offensive star in the game two victory.

Murphy picked up the win in the circle, as she allowed just one hit over 2.1 innings of work, fanning five batters. Emily Deitch retired two of the three hitters she faced, while Lily Hochhausler surrendered just two hits in a scoreless inning of relief. Bubba came in to finish the game, striking out the side in both frames she worked.

The pitching was stellar, but the offense provided plenty of run support getting on the board in the second inning on a two-run single from Lexi Palumbo. SU tacked on two more in the bottom of the third inning, along with three more in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, SU would put the game away to get the run-rule victory as Henry pushed across Ashley Warner on a fly-ball to left field. Bryant went 3-for-3 with a double and triple in game two, while Palumbo was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Warner and Henry each scored twice for SU, which earned its first doubleheader sweep of the year.
