SALISBURY, MD (March 20, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University softball team picked up its third straight win with a five-inning, 9-1 victory over Marymount University Sunday, but fell to host and No. 2-ranked Salisbury University 11-1 in game two to finish action on the weekend in play from Sea Gull Stadium on the campus of Salisbury.
Game 1: Susquehanna 9, Marymount 1 (5 innings)
The River Hawks picked up their second consecutive win over the Saints of Marymount University Sunday afternoon, pounding out 12 hits while surrendering just three in the 9-1 victory.
Kiara Bryant had another stellar game for SU, as the senior third baseman went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. First-year
Hannah Roland also excelled, as she went 3-for-3 with two runs driven in along with a double and triple.
Susquehanna (4-4) jumped out quick on the Saints, scoring two runs in the top of the first on back-to-back run-scoring walks by
Katie Koch and
Morgan Henry. Susquehanna blew the game open in the top of the second, as Roland doubled in a run followed by a
Lexi Palumbo RBI double to make it 4-0 with one out. After Marymount changed pitchers, Bryant delivered a two-run single before coming around to score on a Henry RBI single to center to make it 7-0.
SU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth, as Bryant singled to lead off the frame and came around to score on a double by
Rosemarie Mirabella. Five batters later, Roland would make the game 9-0 as she singled in Mirabella with two outs in the frame.
Marymount got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning, but that was as close as the Saints got. Palumbo finished 2-for-2 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored, while
Ashley Warner reached twice on walks. SU tossed four pitchers in the game, as
Katie Murphy got the predetermined rotation win, starting and throwing one inning while striking out the side.
Lily Hochhausler allowed just one hit over two innings of work, and
Gabby Bubba surrenders two hits over 1.2 innings in relief.
Game 2: No. 2 Salisbury 11, Susquehanna 1 (6 innings)
The second-ranked Sea Gulls of Salisbury tallied four in the third, three in the fifth and four more in the sixth thanks to seven extra-base hits to pick up the victory in the final game of the weekend for both teams.
Both pitchers were cruising until the Sea Gulls came up in the top of the third and Abby Mace connected on a three-run homer followed two batters later by a Lauren Myers big fly to make it 4-0. Susquehanna had a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the third, but a rocket by Bryant with runners at second and third with two outs was snagged to end the inning.
After 1-2-3 innings by both teams in the fourth, Meyers went deep again in the top of the fifth, this time a three-run shot to make it 7-0 in favor of the Sea Gulls. Salisbury pushed four more across in the top of the sixth, but Susquehanna didn't go lightly. Palumbo doubled to start the frame, followed by back-to-back singles by Bryant and Koch to make it 11-1 with two runners on. Salisbury's Lindsey Windsor worked out the jam though to secure the win for the No. 2 Sea Gulls.
Palumbo finished with a 2-for-3 game, scoring once, while Koch also added two singles in the loss. Warner, Bryant and Henry all reached with base hits as well. Bryant currently sports a seven-game hit streak after Sunday, posting four multi-hit games over that stretch including three games with three knocks. Palumbo also also yet to have a game in her first-year campaign without reaching safely on a hit, upping her hit streak to eight games.
Murphy got the start, allowing seven runs in 4.1 innings while striking out eight hitters. Gabba Bubba came relieved her in the fifth inning, allowing no earned runs and four hits.
