SELINSGROVE, PA (March 19, 2022) -- Sophomore midfielder
Caitlin Harvey exploded for a career-high six goals, including five in the opening quarter, as the Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team knocked off Immaculata University 23-11 in non-conference play from Sassafras Field Saturday afternoon.
Harvey eclipsed her previous career-high for goals in a game with two in the opening 4:41 of the game as her third tally of the contest put the River Hawks up 3-2 on the Mighty Macs. Immaculata (2-6) scored the next two goals to take a brief lead at 4-3, but Susquehanna rattled off three scores to make it 6-4 with 3:16 to go in the first period.
Immaculata scored to pull to within at 6-5 but Harvey tallied once more just before the end of the first quarter to make it 7-5 going to the second stanza. The second quarter was all River Hawks, as SU outscored their opponents 5-1 powered by three goals by
Heather Riefenhauser to take a 12-6 lead into the halftime intermission.
The momentum from the second quarter carried over to the third for the River Hawks, as Susquehanna hung nine goals on the board to pull out of striking distance for the Mighty Macs. Susquehanna outshot Immaculata 34-25 on the day, holding a slight 18-15 edge in ground balls.
The River Hawks got a game-high eight points from senior
Caroline Chase, as she posted four goals and four assists in the win. Harvey posted two draw controls and an assist in addition to her goal output, while Riefenhauser totaled four goals and two assists on a team-high eight shots.
Sophomore
Madi Mitchell scored twice in addition to her two ground balls, and first-year
Liv Owen netted a pair of tallies for the River Hawks. First-year
Makenzy Backus netted goals on both of her free position attempts, while
Nikki Genovese also netted a score for SU.
Katie Hoerman finished with a goal, three caused turnovers and two loose ball pickups, and midfield partner
Kelsey Homberg added three caused turnovers, nine draw controls and two ground balls.
Sophomore defender
Liz Hordesky also posted three ground balls and a caused turnover, and goalkeeper
Emmy Regan made seven stops in cage.
The Mighty Macs were paced by the four goals from Jackie Murray, while Liza Laxton tallied a goal and two helpers in defeat.
