Balanced Attack Pushes Men's Lacrosse Past Virginia Wesleyan, 15-8

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (March 22, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team got a combined 10 goals from Kieran Thomas, Matthew Faggioli and Logan Frank, powering past host Virginia Wesleyan University 15-8 in non-conference action from Birdsong Field Tuesday afternoon.

The River Hawks (5-4) have now won three straight games, and Tuesday's performance may have been the best game of the year for the young Susquehanna roster. SU led 4-1 after the first 10 minutes of the game, as Thomas had a pair of goals while Chris Ciccarello tallied once and set up Thomas at the 6:55 mark of the opening stanza. Virginia Wesleyan netted a goal before the end of the first, but SU blitzed the Marlins for six scores in the second period to take a 10-4 edge at the break.

After halftime, Frank quickly scored an unassisted man-up goal to make it 11-4, followed by two more in the third quarter by Faggioli including one with seven seconds to go from Brennan Lorence to make it 13-7. VWU pulled to within five at 13-8 with 14:24 to play in regulation, but late goals from Thomas and Frank locked up the win for the River Hawks.

Thomas had a breakout game for the River Hawks, as the first-year tallied a career-high four goals on seven shots while adding two ground balls. Frank finished with three goals and an assist, while Faggioli netted his first career hat trick in a Susquehanna uniform. Lorence scored once, but registered three assists along with four ground balls, while Jack Gaillard and Cicarello contributed with a goal and assist each. First-year Jack Galloway also scored his first career goal Tuesday.

Defensively, senior Mike Nevins led the way with two caused turnovers while Charles Braught tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover. Gavin Rossman, who was celebrating his birthday Tuesday, also forced a turnover in the game while Ben Shaffer and Ted Zaborowski each nabbed three ground balls. Jared Tavernite was 3-of-4 on draws on the day, picking up two ground balls as well.

Susquehanna held a 47-37 edge in the shot column, and once again shined in transition as it was 29-of-31 in clear attempts. First-year Augie Granatelli made his first career start for the River Hawks, making 16 saves while allowing just eight goals to pick up his first win at Susquehanna while Ian Shaw came in to make a save as well in the final four minutes of action.

Mark Sprague finished with five goals to lead the way for the Marlins.
