River Hawks Finish Non-Conference Play With 14-5 Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA (March 30, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University men's lacrosse squad outscored host Gwynedd Mercy University 5-1 in the opening period en route to a 14-5 victory in the 2022 non-conference finale Wednesday afternoon in Gwynedd Valley.

Susquehanna (6-5) wasted no time jumping on top of the Griffins, as Matthew Faggioli put the River Hawks ahead thanks to a helper from Jack Gaillard at 13:39 of the first quarter. 39 seconds later Susquehanna doubled its lead, as Steven Musser netted a pass from Victor Simone to make it 2-0 just two minutes into the contest. 

The River Hawks would get goals from Kieran Thomas and Chris Ciccarello, followed by another Musser score to take a 5-0 edge with 4:12 into the game. Gwynedd Mercy finally got on the board at the 3:03 mark of the first period, as GianLuca Lockhart tallied to send the game to the second quarter with SU up four goals. 

The defensive units clamped down in the second period, with no goals coming over the first 9:43 of the stanza before Simone buried a pass from Dominic Contella to make it 6-1. The Griffins netted a man-up goal before the halftime break to make it 6-2 at the intermission. 

Right out of the locker room Susquehanna added onto its lead as Thomas set up Jack Gaillard for a score to make it 7-2. SU later in the third quarter posted a 3-1 run, as Jake Turner tallied followed by goals from Rob Swenson and Ciccarello to take a six-goal lead at 10-4. 

Susquehanna continued its momentum with four more goals to start the fourth, as Charles Braught IV tallied before two from Musser and Kobi Buffa to put the game away. 

Gaillard finished with six points on a goal and career-high five assists, adding four ground balls, while Musser led the squad with four goals. CIccarello finished with two goals and two ground balls, and Thomas, Simone and Buffa all posted a goal and an assist. 

Braught led the way with five ground balls and a caused turnover, while Ryan Brum was 12-of-17 on face-offs while picking up five ground balls as well. Contella posted three ground balls and a caused turnover in addition to his assist, while Aidan Kennedy scooped up three loose balls on defense. 

Dylan New finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Brennan Lorence led the team with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Mike Nevins also tallied a caused turnover and two ground balls as well. Jozef Korpics made 13 saves while allowing just four goals over 52:50 in the win. 

Susquehanna outshot Gwynedd Mercy (2-6) 51-22 on the game, but dominated in the clearing game, causing seven turnovers in 20 chances for GMU while going 19-of-23.
