WILLIAMSPORT, PA (March 24, 2022) -- Junior
Morgan Henry connected for two home runs Thursday while
Erin Bean also went deep as the Susquehanna University softball team took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Lycoming College with scores of 10-0 and 12-5 with each finishing in six innings.
Game 1: Susquehanna 10, Lycoming 0 (6 innings)
The River Hawks got on the board quickly in the first inning, wasting no time in pushing across five runs in the opening frame. Senior
Kiara Bryant put SU up 2-0 with a two-run double to left-center and Hanna Roland followed with a RBI double of her own to make it 3-0.
Three pitches later, Henry touched off for her first homer of the day, a prodigious blast to left field to push Susquehanna to a 5-0 lead. The River Hawks added two more runs in the top of the fourth, as Bryant plated a run on a sacrifice fly and Roland singled in Bean to make it 7-0.
The River Hawks tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth, as
Sarah Wargo collected her first collegiate hit on a double with one out to start the rally. First-year
Lexi Palumbo singled in Wargo and Bryant would drive in pinch-runner
Nicole Wuertz to make it 9-0. Henry finished the scoring for SU with a run-scoring single to right field to plate
Ashley Warner.
For the second consecutive game the River Hawks held their opponent to just one hit, as
Katie Murphy surrendered one knock over four innings, striking out eight.
Lily Hochhausler came on and worked two perfect innings in relief, getting five ground outs and a strikeout.
Henry finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored, while Bryant posted two hits in as many at-bats with four RBI and two sacrifice flies. Roland booked a 2-for-3 contest with two RBI, while Palumbo was 2-for-2 with a walk, RBI and run.
Game 2: Susquehanna 12, Lycoming 5
The second game started like the first game for the River Hawks, as SU plated five runs in the first inning to take an early edge. Susquehanna started the game with three straight singles by Bean, Palumbo and Warner to take a 1-0 lead. After Bryant walked to load the bases, Henry blasted a grand slam to center field to put SU up 5-0.
Lycoming finally got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third, but the River Hawks rallied back with five in the top of the fourth highlighted by Bean's first career homerun, a two-run shot to right field. Bryant later tripled in two runs and Henry scored another to make it 10-2 with a sacrifice fly.
The Warriors trimmed Susquehanna's lead to five at 10-5 with five singles in the bottom of the fourth for three runs, but
Ashley Warner pushed SU's edge back up to seven in the top of the fifth to finish the scoring. The game was called due to darkness during the top of the sixth.
Bean had a career-game for the River Hawks, as she went 4-for-4 with two RBI, three runs, and a homer. Henry tallied five runs driven in, tying a career-high, while Warner was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Palumbo pushed her hitting streak up to 12 games after going 1-for-3, and Wargo finished 2-for-3 as well. Bryant also upped her hitting streak to 11 games.
