River Hawk Softball Sweeps Elizabethtown Saturday

SELINSGROVE, PA (April 2, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University softball team won both ends of a Landmark Conference doubleheader with Elizabethtown College, winning the contests two completely different ways as SU picked up victories with scores of 2-0 and 11-3 in five innings from Sassafras Field Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Susquehanna 2, Elizabethtown 0
The River Hawks saw Katie Murphy continue to dominate in the circle, as she tossed a complete-game shutout while fanning 13 and allowing just six hits in a pitcher's dual with Paige Phillips.

Neither team could get much going offensively until the bottom of the fourth when the River Hawks got on the board, pushing across a run on a RBI single from Morgan Henry. The Susquehanna lead would double in the sixth inning, as first-year Lexi Palumbo hammered her first career homer to make it 2-0.

In the top of the seventh, Elizabethtown got a lead-off double but the runner was cut down at third the next play and Murphy got a strikeout and pop-out to clinch the win. Palumbo posted two hits in three at-bats, while Henry was 2-for-3 as well. Susquehanna only posted four hits in the game.

Phillips allowed two runs for E-Town, surrendering the four hits while walking four.

Game 2: Susquehanna 11, Elizabethtown 3
The bats came alive in the nightcap, as Susquehanna pounded out 11 hits while scoring four runs in each of the first two innings to pick up the series sweep of the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown did open the scoring though getting two runs in the top of the first inning, but SU stormed right back with four runs in the bottom half. Zoe Bork singled in a pair to tie the game, followed by a sacrifice fly from Henry and RBI single from Rosemarie Mirabella

After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second, Susquehanna tallied four more runs as Ashley Warner chalked up a RBI single to start the rally. Warner came around on a run-scoring triple from Kiara Bryant, followed by RBI knocks from Bork and Henry to make it 8-2.

Elizabethtown drew closer with a run in the top of the third inning to make it 8-3, but Bork and Mirabella drove in runs to make it 10-3. In the fifth inning, Warner would put the game away with a RBI single to plate Palumbo who walked to start the frame.

Bork finished with a monster game, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Bryant went 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI while Warner finished the game with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

Palumbo saw her 13-game hitting streak come to an end, but still reached twice on walks. Gabby Bubba earned the win for SU, allowing one earned run and four hits while striking out three.

The River Hawks have now won six in a row along with nine of their last 10 contests. Susquehanna also moved to 2-0 in the Landmark Conference for the first time since 2018.
