SELINSGROVE, PA (March 26, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team notched the game's first goal of the game, but visiting No. 18 Catholic University took over from there as the Cardinals earned a 17-1 win over the River Hawks in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams from Sassafras Field.
First-year
Allie Kutler put the River Hawks (7-4, 0-1 Landmark Conference) on top 53 seconds into the game, as she buried a
Kelsey Homberg feed for the quick 1-0 edge. Unfortunately for SU, the Cardinals scored four goals over the next two minutes of game action, with Molly Monaghan netting her fourth of the season to make it 4-1. Catholic, which came into the game with the nation's third-hardest schedule on the season, would go on to net the next 17 goals in cruising to the win.
CUA (4-4, 1-0 Landmark) had 15 players score goals on the game, as only Kate Olsen and Anna Maupin contributed more than one goal apiece. The River Hawks played well in spurts, but were on defense most of the game due to 19-3 deficit in draw controls for the game. Susquehanna transitioned the ball well, clearing 22 of its 25 opportunities, but managed only 16 shots for the game. Homberg finished with a team-high four shots for the game, three going on cage, while picking up five ground balls and causing two turnovers.
Defensively, sophomore
Madi Mitchell posted two ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers, and
Katie Hoerman also finished with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore
Liz Hordesky added two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while
Caitlin Harvey added three loose ball pickups. Junior goalkeeper
Emmy Regan finished with seven saves in-between the pipes for Susquehanna. The River Hawks top four point producers on the season were all held without a point on the day.
The Cardinals got a nice game from Clare Richards, who finished with seven draw controls and a goal, while Rachel Searle added four ground balls and two saves to get the win. Lauren Davidson added five stops as well as she worked the second half in between the pipes, and Caroline Beckett posted a goal and three assists for a game-high four points. The win was Catholic's 57th straight Landmark Conference win, a stretch that dates back to April 20, 2013 in a loss to SU.
