BALTIMORE, MD (April 2, 2022) -- Sophomore
Kelsey Homberg collected her 100th career draw control Saturday, highlighting an emphatic 19-5 win for the Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team over Goucher College in play from Beldon Field in Baltimore, MD.
Susquehanna (8-4, 1-1 Landmark Conference) got out to a quick start, outscoring Goucher College 8-1 in the first quarter. Homberg opened the scoring for SU, but Goucher (2-9, 0-2 Landmark) answered on a goal from Molly Smith two minutes into the game.
The River Hawks would respond by rattling off seven more goals before the end of the opening stanza capped by a goal from first-year
Allie Kutler with four seconds left in the first period to make it 8-1.
The scoring continued for Susquehanna, outscoring their hosts 4-0 in the second quarter as
Caroline Chase sandwiched goals around a pair of tallies from
Heather Riefenhauser to take a 12-1 edge heading into the intermission. Kutler started the second hald with another goal before Goucher got back on the board six minutes into the period.
The Gophers trimmed SU's lead down to 10 at 14-4 with 2:17 to go in the third quarter, but the River Hawks finished the game on a 5-1 run to put the game away. Chase finished with a game-high 10 points with four goals and six assists, scoring on two of her three free-position shots.
First-year
Liv Owen posted four points on three goals and an assist, while Kutler finished with a career-high four goals. Riefenhauser scored three times on five shots on goal, and Homberg added two goals and nine draw controls, as she finished the game with 105 draw controls for her career.
Hannah McNamara,
Nikki Genovese and
Makenzy Backus all scored as well for the River Hawks, who outshot the Gophers 34-12 on the game. Susquehanna forced 20 turnovers, led by the three from
Caitlin Harvey, and was successful on 15 of its 18 clear attempts Saturday.
Julia Gazzola led the Gophers with two goals, while Emily Flinn posted a goal and an assist in the loss.
