SELINSGROVE, PA (April 2, 2022) -- First-year
Steven Musser tallied four goals on 10 shots, helping lead the Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team past visiting Goucher College Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference play from Sassafras Field.
The first-year middie has come on of late, as Musser tied his career-high in goals Saturday while finishing with seven on the week after scoring three times on Wednesday at Gwynedd Mercy. The game also featured something that hasn't happened before at Susquehanna, as junior goalkeeper
Jozef Korpics went coast-to-coast to score a goal after picking up a loose ball behind the net.
The River Hawks (7-5, 1-1 Landmark Conference) opened the scoring at 7:22 of the first quarter as
Jack Gaillard tallied off a nice feed from
Brennan Lorence to make it 1-0. Just over two minutes later, Korpics would extend SU's lead with his heroics.
The contest would go to the second quarter with the River Hawks leading 2-1, but Goucher (2-9, 1-1 Landmark) roared back with a three-goal run to take a 4-3 lead after a Jared Heath goal at 9:30 of the second quarter.
Susquehanna answered with a lengthy run of its own, as
Matthew Faggioli scored his 16th of the season followed by back-to-back scores from Musser to make it 6-4 SU. Gaillard would extend the host's lead up to three right before the break, as he picked up a loose ball and netted an unassisted tally with two seconds left in the half to send the game to intermission with SU up 7-4.
Goucher pulled to within two goals three times in the second half including on a man-up goal with 6:50 left in regulation to make it 10-8.
Chris Ciccarello ended all hopes of a Gopher comeback though, as he scored with 5:26 to go to put the game away.
Musser picked up three ground balls in addition to his four goals, while Gaillard finished with three goals, an assist and three ground balls. Lorence assisted on three goals, and Ciccarello netted a pair of scores.
Defensively, senior captain
Mike Nevins had a career-game, as he finished with a career-high six caused turnovers whiel adding four ground balls. Korpics posted five saves and five loose ball pickups in addition to his goal, and
Gavin Rossman forced three turnovers as well.
Face-off man
Ryan Prum had a huge game for Susquehanna on Saturday, winning 18 of his 23 draws, tying his season-high for face-off victories. Charles Braught added four ground balls, while
Ben Shaffer also picked up four loose balls.
Susquehanna doubled up its visitors in shots on Saturday, 52-26, while forcing the Gophers into 24 turnovers. SU was also a perfect 19-for-19 on clear attempts. Goucher was led by Heath, who finished with five points on two goals and three assists. Justin Lugo made 20 saves between the pipes for GC, also picking up six ground balls.
