Baseball Rallies For 7-3 Win At Southwestern (TX) Saturday

GEORGETOWN, TX (March 5, 2022) – The Susquehanna University River Hawks (2-6) picked up a 7-3, come-from-behind win against the Southwestern University Pirates (2-3) in Georgetown, Texas on Saturday in non-conference action.

Starter Teagan Duffie battled through five innings to keep the River Hawks in the game before the offense came through in the late innings to earn Susquehanna's second win of the season.

Southwestern University seized and early lead in the first, jumping on Duffie quickly. Leadoff hitter Maxwell Mims got the inning started with a single up the middle. Ted Lobkowicz followed up with a tapper down the third base line, beating out the throw to give the Pirates two on with no one out. Left fielder Christian Melilo tripled into the left-center field gap to bring both runner's home. He later scored on a fielder's choice, bringing the lead to 3-0 before Duffie could escape the inning.

Duffie settled in quickly though and was able to keep it close. He threw four innings of shutout ball after the rocky first, finishing his outing with three strikeouts.

In the top of the fourth, the River Hawks got one back. Third basemen Chris Corrado worked a walk to begin the inning and stole second with one out. After a Lance Book strike out, shortstop Michael Biuso singled to left, bringing Corrado around from second and cutting the Southwestern lead to 3-1.

In the seventh the River Hawks struck again. Tyler Hmielewski led off the inning with a walk, and then Kris Morrow was hit by a pitch, gifting the River Hawks two on with no one out. Southwestern starter Travis Harvey was then pulled, finishing his day after six plus innings of work. He struck out nine but walked seven, a number that kept him from going deeper into the game.

Relief pitcher Trey Scwartz struck out Susquehanna 3 and 4-hole hitters Adam Schreck and J.P. Yore before surrendering a two out single to Evan Knapp, scoring Hmielewski from second. Chris Corrado then walked to load the bases. Schwartz was then pulled for J.J. Slack, who threw a wild pitch, scoring Morrow from third to tie the game.

In the eighth, Lance Book singled, putting the go-ahead run on base. He advanced to second on a ground out, and then was brought in by outfielder Sean McCullough, who was put in for Hmielewski to pinch hit, giving the River Hawks a 4-3 lead.

The River Hawks would tack on another two runs in the ninth after an Evan Knapp double got the late rally started. Chris Corrado hit a swinging bunt, fielded by catcher Christian Matthews. Matthews sailed the throw to first, allowing Knapp to score and Corrado to advance to second on the play. Corrado advanced to third on a passed ball before a Brock Veit walk. Veit stole second before another passed ball scored Corrado and advanced Veit to third. Veit then scored on a wild pitch, bringing the lead to 7-3.

In addition to scoring the go ahead run in the eighth, Book finished the game going 2-for-4, a promising showing for the young Susquehanna catcher. Adam Stuck earned the win out of the bullpen, throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless ball to keep the River Hawks in it.
