Late Rally Falls Just Short for Susquehanna Baseball

GEORGETOWN, TX - After trailing 7-1 heading into the top of the sixth, the River Hawks scored eight runs in their final four at bats to nearly overcome the early deficit, but Southwestern was able to tack on just enough runs at the end of the game to pull away for 10-9 walk off win.

The Pirates jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead over SU as they scored a run in the first, and then three runs in the next two innings. Susquehanna got their first run of the day when Adam Schreck doubled to right center, scoring Brock Veit and cutting the deficit to six runs.

In the sixth, the bats started to get rolling for the River Hawks. After back to back zeroes from Aidan Piccioni and Dominic Yeager, Brock Veit stole both second and third, allowing Evan Knapp to bring him home on a ground out. Kris Morrow, who reached on a walk prior to the Knapp groundout, then scored on a Tony Rossi single up the middle bringing the score to 7-3 Pirates. Chris Corrado then blasted a pitch deep to left and over the fence for his first home run of the season, and bringing the deficit to two.

Susquehanna continued to chip away and cut the Southwestern lead to just one run, as Schreck brought Knapp home on an infield single in the top of the eighth. Southwestern finally responded in the same frame, tacking on two insurance runs, to increase their lead to 9-6.

In top of the ninth, Sean McCulloch led off the inning with a walk, and Thomas Borum followed with a pinch hit single to right. After a strike out, Veit drove in McCulloch with a sac fly to bring the score to 9-7, but the out also brought SU to their final out of the game. In a pressure packed situation, the River Hawks got back to back extra base hits, as Morrow tripled to center and Knapp followed with a double to bring home Morrow to tie the game.

The bottom of the frame did not prove as fruitful as Susquehanna, as back to back runners reached for the Pirates with two outs. Soon after, the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, and another wild pitch allowed the game winning run to score.

Morrow, Knapp and Schreck each had a multi-hit day, as they all had an extra-base hits, with Knapp smacking two doubles. Corrado also homered for the first time this season, and Veit stole two bases while McCulloch swiped three. Susquehanna was excellent with two outs in the game, as they were 6-14 in two out situations.

Piccioni was solid out the pen for Susquehanna, allowing no runs in 1.1 innings of work and Yeager tossed three innings of one run ball to keep the game close for the River Hawks.
