SELINSGROVE, PA (April 10, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University men's tennis team honored its three seniors in
Ethan Cooley,
John Kittelberger and
Emil Vyskocil along with exchange student
Henrik Sandstede. Unfortunately, the River Hawks couldn't pull the upset as visiting Drew University earned a 7-2 Landmark Conference win in play from Garrett Courts.
Despite falling in all three doubles matches on Sunday, the River Hawks (6-3, 1-1 Landmark Conference) pushed Drew in all three contests. Dan Blumenthal and Leo Ambrogio topped
John Duncan and
Joshua Sanderson 8-6 in an exciting match at No. 2, while Avi Perera and Bret Schuler outlasted Vyskocil and Sandstede 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles,
Tim Basta and Cooley led throughout and pushed the match to a tie-breaker, but John Dickey and Santo Carroccia controlled the breaker 7-2 to pick up the 8-7 (2) win.
Susquehanna fell behind 4-0 in the match as Perera bested Vyskocil 6-1, 6-2, but the River Hawks kept the match going as Sanderson posted a 6-4, 6-4 straight set win over Blumenthal. Sanderson leads the team with eight victories this season, going 7-2 at the No. 2 position.
The match win would be clinched though on the next decision, as Basta fell to Carroccia 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Sandstede earned another win though for Susquehanna at No. 3 singles, as he evened his record at 2-2 on the season with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 come-from-behind win.
The Rangers (12-3, 4-0 Landmark) would earn straight set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles as well to finish the day's action.
