Pitching Pushes Softball Past York In Twinbill Sweep

YORK, PA (April 12, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University softball team rallied in game one for a 3-2 win over host York College (Pa.) Tuesday, using that momentum to pick up a 5-1 win in game two to complete the sweep. Susquehanna's pitching was strong on Tuesday, allowing just three runs over the two games.

Game 1: Susquehanna 3, York 2
The River Hawks posted three runs in the decisive sixth inning, erasing a two-run deficit in a t-3-2 win over the Spartans. York posted two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an error and a bases-loaded walk.

Susquehanna got out of the jam in the fourth inning to keep within striking distance. In the sixth inning, Rosemarie Mirabella started the rally with a walk, as Lexi Palumbo walked three batters later.

After a fielder's choice put runners as the corners, senior Kiara Bryant singled in a run to make it 2-1. Zoe Bork stepped up next and singled up the middle to bring around both Bryant and Ashley Warners to make it 3-2.

That was plenty for SU hurler Katie Murphy, who retired the last six batters in a row to clinch the win. Murphy came in for relief and retired all 10 batters she faced to earn the win, striking out eight of the 10 Spartans she faced.

Susquehanna managed only three hits in game one, as Bryant and Bork singled while Mirabella doubled in a 1-for-2 game with a walk. Gabby Bubba started for SU, allowing five hits and two unearned runs.

Game 2: Susquehanna 5, York 1
Murphy tossed five more innings of scoreless relief in game two, and Palumbo went 2-for-3 with two RBI as SU completed the sweep.

The River Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the first, as Bork singled in Palumbo who had walked earlier in the frame. York tied the game in the bottom of the first, but SU came right back with two runs in the top of the second. Hailey Kaba doubled in a run to make it 2-1, coming around on a Palumbo single to left-center.

After threatening in the third inning, Susquehanna added on another run in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Erin Bean and Palumbo. SU's lead swelled to 5-1 in the top of the fifth, as Kaba doubled in a run with two outs.

Palumbo was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk, while Kaba was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Warner also added a 1-for-3 contest with a double and a walk. Bubba started and went the first two innings, allowing three hits and a run before handing the ball over to Murphy.
