SCRANTON, PA (April 16, 2022) -- Senior
Dillan Weikel was once again stellar Saturday afternoon at the University of Scranton, earning another victory on the bump to help the Susquehanna University baseball team to a Landmark Conference split at the University of Scranton from Volpe Field. SU picked up the first game 5-1 before falling 6-0 in a rain-shortened game two.Â
Game 1: Susquehanna 5, Scranton 1
Weikel worked into the eighth inning on Saturday, logging 7.2 innings of work while allowing just three hits and one earned run as the River Hawks earned a key victory on the road.Â
The contest was scoreless into the top of the fifth, but that changed when
Lance Book singled in
Thomas Romanelli. The next frame provided the big hit of the game for the River Hawks.
Sean McCulloch doubled to start the rally, followed by a walk by
Kris Morrow. With two outs, senior
Evan Knapp blasted a three-run shot to right-center field to make it 4-0.Â
In the top of the seventh, SU tacked on another run as Book doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning. Book moved to third on a wild pitch, and then came in on a RBI single from
Brock Veit.Â
Scranton got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Kirsten, but that was all the Royals would muster. The hosts put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but
Aidan Martin came in to strike out Nick Reposa to end the rally.Â
Martin would work a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up the save for SU, his third of the season.
Knapp was 2-for-4 including the three-run shot, while Book was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. SU posted four doubles in the contest, while Veit finished 1-for-4 with a RBI and stolen base.Â
Game 2: Scranton 6, Susquehanna 0Â
The host Royals chalked up four runs in the bottom of the fourth, and that was all the offense needed in the 6-0 win. The contest was delayed in the sixth inning, and ultimately made an official game after the rain became stronger.Â
The big hit in the first inning came by Kirsten, as he tripled in three runs before coming around himself on a sacrifice fly by Jake Lisicky. The Royals tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-0, as Dan Crossan singled in a run to highlight the frame.Â
The best rally for the River Hawks came in the top of the fifth, as
Tyler Hargus doubled to right field followed by a Veit single to put runners at first and second with no outs. Susquehanna though would fail to move them around from that point. In the top of the sixth, umpires stopped the game after two batters were retired in the top half.Â
Hargus was 2-for-2 in game two for Susquehanna, and
Kris Morrow finished 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
Teagan Duffie went three innings on the mount in the start, allowing six hits and five runs before handing the ball to
Landon Ness. Ness allowed one hit and one earned run, and
Cole Bernier followed with a scoreless inning of relief.Â
