SELINSGROVE, PA (April 21, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University baseball fought off three separate Keystone College rallies Thursday afternoon, getting clutch hitting in a 9-6 non-conference win in action from Harold Bollinger Field.
The River Hawks (12-16) fell behind early as the Giants got a pair of runs off River Hawk starter
Cole Bernier in the top of the second. Susquehanna would respond in the bottom of the third, as
Camryn Eberly started a three-run rally with a lead-off walk. After a balk, Eberly would come around on a RBI double to left-center by
Brock Veit. Susquehanna tied the game on the next at-bat, as
Kris Morrow ripped a RBI single to left field to play Veit. Morrow moved to second on a stolen base, and scored two batters later on the first of two sacrifice flies on the day by
Adam Schreck.
The Giants (12-14) came right back with a single run in the top of the fourth, as Bobby Pokorney singled in Vince Montone for his second RBI of the game. The game remained deadlocked at three until the River Hawks pushed across three more in the bottom of the fifth. In the frame,
Evan Knapp posted an RBI double before coming around to score on a run-scoring fly ball from Schreck.
In the top of the sixth, Keystone inched back with a run of its own thanks to a RBI double from Montone. The River Hawks answered the run with one of their own, as Eberly registered his first collegiate hit with a bunt single over the head of the Keystone pitcher Nick Gravel to make it 7-4.
Once again, the Giants refused to go away as they pulled to within one at 7-6 after a RBI double and sacrifice fly. SU wasted no time regaining its three-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, as Knapp and Schreck singled to start the inning. Knapp would move to third on a fly ball by
Lance Book, coming in on the second of two run-scoring balks for SU Thursday. Schreck also scored later in the frame on a two-out Keystone error.
That's all the scoring the game would get, as
Dominic Yeager came on in the top of the eighth for the River Hawks and nailed down his second save of the season.
Veit finished 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and two runs scored. Knapp was also 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, while Schreck finished 1-for-2 with two RBI. Morrow also was 1-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and two runs in the win.
On the mound for Susquehanna, Bernier started and went 4.1 innings while surrendering five hits and two earned runs.
Brice Gregory got the win, needing just two pitches to get a inning-ending double-play in the top of the fifth. Landon Nexx posted a scoreless seventh inning, and Yeager allowed one hit while fanning two in his two strong frames out of the bullpen.
Pokorney led all players with three hits in the contest for KC, while Montone and RJ Gouldsbury each posted two hits in the loss.
