ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (April 2, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University baseball team dropped both ends of a Landmark Conference doubleheader Saturday, as the host Blue Jays knocked off the River Hawks with scores of 7-1 and 3-2 in play from Kevin Scott Boyd Field.
Game 1: Elizabethtown 7, Susquehanna 1
The Blue Jays scored two runs in the first, fifth and eighth innings, and Tyler Dunbar went eight innings while striking out 11 as E-Town earned the victory in game one.
The River Hawks had chances in the first game of the day, but couldn't get a big hit when they needed it as they stranded nine runners on base in the game. In the top of the first,
Sean McCulloch walked, followed by a single by
Evan Knapp to put runners at first and second. A wild pitch moved the runners up with one out, but SU couldn't convert.
Elizabethtown would put two on the board in the bottom of the first, as Robbie Bertucio and Ben Watson singled in runs to take the early lead. E-Town posted a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Susquehanna threatened in the top of the fifth but stranded runners at second and third.
The hosts pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but wouldn't get on the board until the top of the eighth, as
Brock Veit walked with one out to start the rally. Veit stole second, and would come around on a RBI single from
Adam Schreck. The rally ended though a batter later, as
Tony Rossi lined into a double play to end the frame.
The Blue Jays chalked up two more in the eighth to put the game away.
Kris Morrow went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases while
Chris Corrado was 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Dillan Weikel allowed five hits and three earned runs, striking out three.
Dominic Yeager allowed two runs and three hits over three innings in relief.
Game 2: Elizabethtown 3, Susquehanna 2
Host Elizabethtown College scored one run in the third and two in the fifth, and held off a late rally from the River Hawks to earn the sweep.
The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Garrett Schwartzbeck singled in a run with two outs. Schwartzbeck drove in another run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, followed by a run-scoring single from Bertucio as Elizabethtown added to its lead.
Susquehanna would get back into the game in the top of the eighth, as Corrado walked followed by a hit by pitch to
Lance Book to put runners on first and second with no outs. The runners moved up a base on a ground out, and senior
Evan Knapp drove them both in with a RBI single while moving to second the throw home. E-Town went to the bullpen after that, and Eric Sipling struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
That would be as close as SU would get, going 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to move to 2-2 on the year in Landmark Conference play.
Knapp finished with two hits in three at-bats, while McCulloch, Rossi and Michael Buiso each doubled in the game for SU.
Teagan Duffie went 5.2 innings, striking out six while allowing three earned runs while
Aidan Martin gave up just one hit and one walk over 2.1 innings of work.
