Softball Knocks Off York, Edged By No. 2 Salisbury Sunday

YORK, PA (April 3, 2022) -- Susquehanna University topped host York College of Pennsylvania Sunday 7-2 in the first of two games in York, PA, but couldn't fend off No. 2 Salisbury University in the nightcap in a 2-1 defeat to the Sea Gulls in action from Spartan Softball Stadium.

Game 1: Susquehanna 7, York (Pa.) 2
The River Hawk offense posted runs in four of their six offensive frames while holding the potent Spartan offense to just two runs as Susquehanna upped its win streak to seven games with a 7-2 win.

Playing as the home team, SU (11-4) scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first as Zoe Bork doubled in Kiara Bryant and Ashley Warner, both of whom reached on errors. In the bottom of the third, Susquehanna pushed three more runs across as Katie Koch doubled in a run, followed by a two-run single from Nicole Plesh

York got on the board with a two-run homer from Alyssa Harhigh in the top of the fifth, but Susquehanna responded with a run of its own in the bottom half on a successful double steal, as Morgan Henry scored after the throw for Koch at second wasn't in time. Bork would drive in another run in the bottom of the sixth, plating Erin Bean after her lead-off single.

York's last ditch effort in the seventh inning wasn't to be, as SU retired the Spartans 1-2-3 to secure the victory. Bork finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Koch went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Plesh also finished with two hits in three at-bats, and Lexi Palumbo was 1-for-3 with a double.

Gabby Bubba earned the win in the circle, surrendering just five hits and two walks, striking out four batters. Katie Murphy came on in relief to strike out seven hitters, allowing two hits and two runs.

Game 2: No. 2 Salisbury 2, Susquehanna 1
The River Hawks battled the second-ranked Sea Gulls in a hard-fought contest, responding well after falling to Salisbury a few weeks ago by run-rule. Both pitching staffs were strong, allowing a total of 10 hits combined across the teams.

Susquehanna (11-5) got on the board first in the top of the second with one out, as Bork hammered her second homer of the season way over the left-center wall for a 1-0 lead. Salisbury would come back in the bottom of the second, pushing runs across on RBI singles from Lindsey Windsor and Maddison Lednum to take the lead.

The River Hawks would put runners on first and second in the top of the fourth, but Salisbury got out of the jam on a ground-ball double play. Susquehanna would a runner in scoring position three of the final four innings, but couldn't push a run across in dropping the tight affair.

Bork finished 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt, while Palumbo reached two on walks. Palumbo has now reached safely in all 16 games this season. Plesh, Henry and Bryant all had hits as well for Susquehanna. Bubba was saddled with the loss, allowing just five hits and two earned runs, while Murphy came out of the bullpen to surrender no hits or runs in two scoreless innings of relief.
