Women's Lacrosse Nipped By Juniata In Overtime

HUNTINGDON, PA (April 20, 2022) -- Peyton Goodrich scored her sixth goal of the game in double overtime to lead the Eagles of Juniata College to a 15-14 Landmark Conference victory over the Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team in action from Gibbel Stadium Wednesday. 

The Eagles (11-3, 3-2 Landmark) outscored Susquehanna 6-3 in the opening quarter, but the River Hawks rallied in the second period. After JC took a 7-3 lead with 11:39 left in the second frame, Kelsey Homberg started a 6-1 spurt in the second quarter to take a 9-8 lead at the halftime break. 

After the intermission, Susquehanna took its largest lead of the game at 10-8 on a Heather Riefenhauser goal. The Eagles netted the next two goals to deadlock the game at 10, but Homberg scored with help from senior Caroline Chase to push SU back ahead. 

Goals from Goodrich and Grace Gibbs put Juniata back on top, but first-year Liv Owen scored unassisted to tie the game again at 12. Hannah McNamara netted a score with 3:17 to play in regulation for another River Hawk lead, but Juniata roared back with two goals including one with 37 seconds to go to re-take the lead at 14-13. 

On the ensuring draw control, the River Hawks picked up the loose ball and called timeout. After the break, Riefenhauser made a nice move and found the back of the net with eight seconds to go to send the game to overtime. 

In overtime, Emmy Regan made two great saves to keep the game going including one on a free position shot with six seconds to go in the first period. In the second extra session, Juniata had the ball most of the period and Goodrich scored with 27 seconds left in the frame to give the Eagles the win. 

Caroline Chase finished with four points on a goal and three assists, becoming the first player in Susquehanna women's lacrosse history with 100 points in a season. Chase now sits with 103 points this spring. Owen tallied a team-best three goals, while Riefenhauser, Homberg and McNamara all added two goals apiece. 

Homberg added a team-high eight draw controls, while Allie Kutler tallied a goal, assist and four draw controls. Caitlin Harvey also posted a goal, two ground balls and two draw controls. Homberg moved into sixth all-time in draw controls for her career with 122. 

Defensively, Katie Hoerman finished with a team-high four caused turnovers, picking up two draw controls, and Liz Hordesky caused two mistakes while picking up a team-high five ground balls. Regan finished with 15 stops between the pipes for SU. 

Goodrich finished with a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists, while Gibbs posted three goals as well.
