SELINSGROVE, PA (APRIL 23, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University baseball team rallied in game one, before leading wire-to-wire in game two, sweeping the Moravian Greyhounds 10-7, before taking the nightcap 7-0 in Landmark Conference action from Harold Bollinger Field on Saturday.
Game 1: Susquehanna 10, Moravian 7
The River Hawks (14-16) fell behind in the top of the first as the Greyhounds used a bases loaded walk off River Hawk starter
Dillan Weikel. Moravian extended the lead in the top of the fourth as Robert Roman drove in two runs on a single through the left side of the infield, before scoring himself two batters later, on a throwing error from Michael Buiso.
Susquehanna responded getting on the board in the bottom half of the inning as Buiso made up for his miscue, driving a single to right field, scoring
Lance Book. Down by three entering the home half of the fifth inning, the River Hawk bats came to life. Susquehanna loaded the bases starting with an
Evan Knapp single, followed by
Adam Schreck reaching on a throwing error by Chris Pow and finally a walk by Book. Following a
J.P. Yore strikeout,
Chris Corrado delivered a 1-0 pitch over the right centerfield wall, to clear the bases and put SU up 5-4. Two batters later Buiso took an 0-1 fastball and drove it over the right field fence to extend the River Hawks lead to 6-4.
The Greyhounds did not go away quietly though, as in the top of the sixth inning Moravian got two runners on bases with nobody out, ending the day for Weikel, as
Tyler Rigot came on in relief. Moravian loaded the bases as the first hitter Rigot faced, reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded and no one out, Rigot forced a Mason Fisher sacrifice fly, before conceding a run scoring single to right field for Derek Holmes. Rigot, however limited the damage to two runs, getting a strikeout and groundout to keep the game tied, 6-6.
The River Hawks did not waste any time, however regaining the lead in the home half of the sixth. With two outs, Book started the rally with a single to right field, before coming around to score a Yore triple off the right field wall. After a Corrado walk, the speedy third baseman stole second, and catcher Nick Montone's throw sailed into the outfield allowing Yore to touch home, and push the lead back up to two, 8-6.
Moravian got a run back in the eighth inning off a Holmes run scoring double. But that was as close as the Greyhounds got as Yore singled in pinch runner
Tyler Hmielewski, before scoring himself on a Corrado double.
Aidan Martin came on in relief in the ninth, and after a leadoff walk, got two ground balls, the first a fielder's choice and the second a double-play ball to close out the game, giving the Hawks a 10-7 win.
It was a stellar day at the dish for Corrado who went 2-for-4 with a grand slam while driving in two runs, Buiso who also went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBIs, and Book who finished 3-for-4 scoring three times on the afternoon. Weikel worked into the sixth inning but collected a no-decision, surrendering 7 and 6 runs (4 earned) while striking out 6, as Rigot came out of the bullpen to collect his first win of the season, going three innings, allowing three and one earned run, before Martin collected his fourth save of the season.
Game 2: Susquehanna 7, Moravian 0
The River Hawks bats stayed hot in the nightcap, driving two more home runs on the day, providing more than enough support for starting pitcher
Teagan Duffie.
Both Duffie and Moravian starter Aaron Flyte worked 1-2-3 innings in the first, before Susquehanna struck in the bottom of the second inning.
Lance Book started the rally reaching second on a dropped fly ball from the Moravian right field before moving over to the third on a
Chris Corrado sacrifice to right. With two gone in the second
Brock Veit delivered the winning hit, singling through the left side of the infield to bring home Book.
The River Hawks tacked on two more runs in the home half of the third. Two batters after a leadoff single from
Sean McCulloch,
Evan Knapp turned on the first pitch of the at bat, crushing one over the right field fence to extend the lead, 3-0.
McCulloch again led off, this time in the fifth, working a leadoff walk. Following a
Kris Morrow fly out, Knapp advanced McCulloch to third on a single through the right side. Looking to push the envelope, Knapp took second on a steal, allowing for McCulloch to come to the plate on the through.
With the lead at 4-0 after five innings, Duffie continued to deal. The sophomore pitcher worked seven and a third scoreless innings scattering four hits, while striking out four, before giving way to
Adam Stuck out of the bullpen, going an inning and two thirds, and striking out two, to collect his first save of the season.
Up 4-0 in the eighth, SU left no doubt to the outcome, putting the game out of reach, by adding three runs in the inning. With one away in the inning, Corrado started the run by reaching first on a fielding error by the Greyhound shortstop, before stealing second base. Pinch hitter
Thomas Romanelli stepped in and deliver a single up the middle allowing Corrado to come around to score.
J.P. Yore, who came into pinch hit for
Michael Mancuso put the finishing touches on the Saturday sweep, hammering a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall, pushing the lead to 7-0.
McCulloch, Knapp, and Yore led the way at the dish in the nightcap, as McCulloch went 2-for-4 scoring twice and adding two stolen bases, while Knapp went 2-for-3 adding a single to his a two-run home run, with Yore coming off the bench and delivering a two-run home run himself. SU stole five bases in the contest.
