SELINSGROVE, PA (April 24, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University baseball team led 4-2 going to the seventh inning, but visiting Moravian University plated five runs over the final three innings to rally for a 7-4 Landmark Conference victory from Bollinger Field Sunday afternoon. The loss for SU snapped an eight-game win streak this season at home, though the River Hawks did still win the season series after Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Greyhounds.
Neither team could get anything going until the bottom of the third when
Brock Veit singled up the middle to get things started. Sophomore
Sean McCulloch singled to the pitcher, followed by a
Kris Morrow hit by pitch to load the bases. Senior
Evan Knapp would lift a fly ball to left field to played
Michael Biuso to make it 1-0 for the River Hawks.
Moravian evened the game at one in the top of the fourth, but a Biuso RBI double down the right-field line in the bottom of the fourth restored SU's one-run lead.
After the Greyhounds once again pushed across one run on a RBI single by David Bertolotti, the River Hawks came right back with two runs to take a 4-2 edge. In the frame, JP Yore was hit to reach safely, coming around on a sacrifice fly by Veit. Biuso would walk, steal second and then score on a McCulloch single to push the lead to two for the hosts.
From that point on though, Moravian would take control as it evened the score at four after a two-out, two-run single by Patrick Benolken. The Greyhounds took their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth, as Paul Croyle pushed across on a wild pitch. MU scored two more in the top of the ninth to make it 7-4, but SU did have a chance to tie the game in their half. Yore singled and
Chris Corrado was plunked to put the tying run at the plate. The River Hawks though couldn't get the big blast or keep the rally going, as Moravian salvaged the series with the win.
Corrado had a strong series, as he went 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base. McCulloch finished with two hits and a stolen base, while Yore added a multi-hit game after going 2-for-4.
On the mound, senior
Kyle Sears was solid for the River Hawks as the right-hander went 5.2 innings while allowing five hits and two earned runs, fanning five hitters.
Benolken was 3-for-5 with four runs driven in for Moravian, while Derek Holmes had two hits and scored three times.
