SELINSGROVE, PA (April 29, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University tennis team took four of six singles' matches, but unfortunately visiting University of Scranton swept doubles to help earn a 5-4 Landmark Conference victory over the River Hawks in action from Garrett Courts Friday.
In doubles' action,
Haley White and
Isabella Scappaticci were tripped up by Lily Nowak and Brigid O'Mara 8-3 at No. 2 doubles as Scranton took a 1-0 lead. After the Royals took a 2-0 lead at No. 3 pairs, the most exciting match in doubles was on display at No. 1 doubles.
Senior
Ashlynn Searer and sophomore
Julie Bramley trailed 5-1 in the match, but rallied to tie the match at five. The teams traded games to make it 6-6, but the Royals were able to take the final two games to capture an 8-6 win to sweep doubles.
Singles' play would go much better for the River Hawks, as
Kristen Bair improved to 8-3 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing at No. 6. Bair improved to 4-2 in Landmark Conference action, making the match score 3-1.
Scranton would pick up a win at No. 3 singles, and Nowak topped Bramley 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot to clinch the victory for the Royals. The rest of the match would go the way of the host River Hawks, as Scappaticci rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles. The sophomore improved to 7-7 on the year, now winning back-to-back matches.
Searer won her second straight match at No. 1 singles, as she won the first set before winning by retirement down 3-2 in the second set. The final victory of the day for SU came at No. 4 singles, as
Grace Tepes won 6-3, 7-5 in straight sets. Tepes improved to 3-2 on the campaign.
