Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

River Hawks Unable to Convert Chances Against York

SELINSGROVE, PA (September 10, 2022) – Susquehanna Men's Soccer hosted their first home match of the season on Saturday afternoon, welcoming the Spartans of York College (PA) to Sassafras Field as SU pursues it's first win of the 2022 campaign. That win would continue to elude them today though, as York handed the River Hawks a 3-0 defeat on home turf.

Quality over quantity would prove to be the theme of the match, as York seemed to consistently find the net with their scoring chances despite SU getting more of them. The River Hawks tallied 14 shots to York's 10, and five on goal to York's four. They also racked up eight corner kicks to the Spartans' three and drew five saves from York's keeper while SU's junior goalkeeper Gerrit Stech had only one save in the match.

Susquehanna looked like the team on the front foot to begin the match, forcing saves on three of their seven shots in the first half. York would hold firm though and produce some chances of their own, eventually putting the first goal on the board in the 21st minute of the match after a well-crossed ball was steered into the left side of the net past Stech's outstretched glove.

The River Hawks piled on the pressure in search of an equalizer, not allowing a York shot for the remainder of the first half and tallying five consecutive shots of their own, but none broke through and they entered halftime trailing 1-0. The push continued in the opening minutes of the second half, with three more shots for SU and three consecutive corner kicks as they hemmed the Spartans in their own end. But against the run of play, the next goal came for York rather than Susquehanna, as they converted a counterattack chance in the 58th minute to take a 2-0 lead. The frustrations began to mount for the River Hawks as shot after shot was saved or missed the net and fouls began to rack up on both sides. York found the net once more in the 85th minute, with their forward Jack Mitzelfelt completing a hat trick as he netted all three of the Spartans' goals on the day.

SU will continue their pursuit of win number one on September 13, as they travel to face Wilkes University, kicking off at 7 pm. Their next home match is slated for Friday the 16th of September, as they'll host Widener University for a non-conference matchup.
