WILLIAMSPORT, PA (September 11, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University men's tennis team lifted the lid on the 2022-23 season slate Sunday afternoon, knocking off host Penn College 7-2 in non-conference play from the Central Pennsylvania Tennis Center.
The River Hawks (1-0) got on the board first with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles as
Thomas Hallahan and
Tim Basta topped Jesse Kight and Zack Burkhart 8-0. SU doubled its lead with an 8-1 win at No. 3 as
Gavin Ream and
Conor Ryan picked up the victory, while
Joshua Sanderson and
John Duncan teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles to sweep the pairs action.
As the teams moved to singles' play, Susquehanna saw first-year player Flemming Brockmann cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to make the match score 4-0 in favor of the visitors. SU clinched the team victory at No. 4 singles, as Hallahan picked up his first collegiate singles win for the River Hawks with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Burkhart.
Duncan tallied a win at No. 3 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-0, while Sanderson played a marathon contest at No. 1 singles before securing a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (9) victory. Basta dropped a hard-fought match at No. 2 to Penn College's Kyle Shuler 6-2, 7-5, while Logan Ogden outlasted Ream at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (8).
