Women's Soccer Falls in Game #2 of Virginia Trip

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (September 11, 2022) – Susquehanna Women's Soccer concluded their weekend in Virginia on Sunday morning as they faced Virginia Wesleyan University, on the back of their match with No.1-ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon. Despite taking the lead in the first half, the River Hawks were ultimately unable to see it out, falling 3-1 at the final whistle.

SU withstood significant offensive pressure early in the match, facing 11 shots in the first half and needing three saves from senior goalkeeper Carlie Marquette to keep VWU off the board. Meanwhile, the River Hawks were able to fire home the opening goal of the match in the 32nd minute, with junior forward Mikela Florio scoring her second goal of the season.

After taking the 1-0 scoreline into the halftime break, Susquehanna saw their lead vanish in the opening moments of the second half, as VWU scored an equalizer in the 47th minute. SU would be find a new gear on offense following VWU's first goal, taking control of possession and doubling their shot output, having 12 in the second half after only tallying six in the first. Their efforts ultimately were fruitless though, while VWU proved to be clinical on their counterattacking chances, netting again in the 52nd minute and putting the game to bed in the 86th minute with the final goal of the match.

Despite the final score, the statistics were relatively even between the two teams, with VWU tallying 22 shots with nine on goal, compared to 18 for SU with seven on net. Each team had six saves and six corner kicks during the match.

The River Hawks will now return to familiar confines for a short two-game home stand, hosting Wilkes University on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 pm, before Grove City College comes to Selinsgrove on Saturday the 17th for a 2:30 pm kickoff. With SU now 2-3 on the season, they'll look to rebound with some strong results at home.
